Whether it is your first piercing or the latest addition to your stack, we know you’ll be eager to start mixing and matching your new earring styles!
There are a few things you’ll need to consider first before you do.
Take a look at our guide to make sure changing your earrings for the first time goes without a hitch!
The main piece of advice we can give you before changing your earrings for the first time is to make sure that the piercing has fully healed. It can lead to some troublesome complications if you take the stud earring out too soon and it it hasn't.
A fully healed piercing will have no sign of redness or swelling. Any pain will have also eased as should any natural discharge which can appear during the healing process. You should also be able to gently move the earring without feeling any discomfort.
Your piercing will have the best chance of healing quickly if you clean it regularly with a salt water solution (we recommend a mixture of 1/4 tsp salt to about 250ml cooled, boiled water).
Cleaning it once in the morning and once at night should be enough.
How long you should wait before changing your starter jewellery for the first time depends on where your piercing is. In the case of ear lobes, you’ll want to wait at least 6 weeks before you switch your jewellery.
Cartilage piercings (such as Tragus, Upper and Lower Conch, or Daith piercings) take quite a lot longer to heal at 3 to 6 months.
Sometimes it can take up to year in the case of Helix and Navel piercings. It’s true though that everyone is different, so it’s best to check for signs that your ear is fully healed before making the decision to change your piercing.
You may need to take it out sooner if it’s causing you an excessive amount of pain as it can be a sign of an infection or allergic reaction.
However, this is much less likely if you’ve used a hypoallergenic metal for your first piercing; our stainless-steel ball stud earrings would be the perfect choice.
Taking out an earring before your ear has fully healed can lead to a nasty infection, permanent swelling and in some cases, the body rejecting any new piece of jewellery you try to put in.
In some cases, an unhealed ear can effectively “swallow” new jewellery which will then need removing by a professional.
If you remove starter studs too early but don’t put in new jewellery, the earlobe can simply close back up, wasting the time and money you put into getting your piercing in the first place.
So, you’ve checked your piercing and it’s healed perfectly. You’ve ordered yourself a new pair of earrings and you can’t wait to get them in. But how do you swap them over without any fuss? With these easy steps, it will be a doddle.
Step 1: Wash Your Hands and Clean Your Ears
Wash your hands thoroughly with mild soap and water before you touch your piercing. If you need to, tie your hair back before using a fresh, clean cloth and soap and water to gently wipe around your piercing. This will make sure your ear is free of any dirt or dead skin cell buildup that might otherwise get into the piercing if it’s not 100% healed.
Step 2: Get Comfortable
Make sure you’re nice and relaxed so you’re not too tense to deal with any fiddly earring closures. You don’t want to go yanking them out in a panic and drop a back or worse still, damaging your lobe. So, take a breath and get comfy – preferably in front of a mirror as it might come in useful for the next step.
But beware! It’s best not to change your jewellery over the bathroom sink. One false move and you could end up losing your earring down the sink. Put the plug in or try sitting on the floor with a make-up mirror. That way it won’t have far to roll if you do happen to drop it.
Step 3: Remove or Open the Earring Back in the Correct Way
If you’re changing an earlobe piercing, chances are it’s a classic stud with a push back closing (also known as a butterfly back) like those found on almost all our allergy free studs.
To remove these types of earrings, gently pinch the back and apply a small amount of pressure until it slides all the way along and off the post. You might find it easier doing this in the mirror (as mentioned earlier) so you can watch what you’re doing. Once the back is off, gently pull the front of the earring forward so the post glides through and free of the ear.
If you’re changing a cartilage piercing, you may need to use a slightly different technique. Some posts (like those on found on most of our hypoallergenic cartilage studs) are threaded and require an end being screwed off whilst some rings need snapping open on a hinge. It’s best to ask your piercer when you get your piercing done to be sure.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully removed your starter earrings. Now you can start getting creative with your style. But before you dive in, there’s a couple more things you need to consider first.
Be careful not to choose earrings with posts or threads that are two thick for your piercing – particularly if it’s a cartilage piercing.
You should also avoid wearing jewellery that’s too heavy and likely to put too much weight on your lobe. At least for the first 6 months or so.
Putting too much pressure on your piercings can sometimes lead to irritation.
But that’s less likely if you’re wearing hypoallergenic jewellery! Our pieces are made from high quality, medical grade stainless steel which 95% of people can wear completely irritation free. We also have some fantastic titanium options for those few people who can’t wear stainless steel.
Avoiding heavy jewellery is the reason why it’s a good idea to stay away from very large hoop earrings for the first six months after you’ve had your ears pierced. We recommend our perfect mini huggie hoops or small gold hoops instead.
We love huggie earrings because they can be dressed down or glammed up to suit your mood. You might want to stick with our timeless PVD plain gold hoop earrings or stainless-steel silver hoops earrings. Or personalise them with some stylish charms like those on our star and moon hypoallergenic charms and pearl hypoallergenic charms.
It’s fine to switch from lighter styles to large or chunky hoops after your earlobes have been healed for six months.
Now it’s time to be as adventurous as you like! Check out our gold chain drop earrings for some night out drama or our bezel gem hypoallergenic hoops for a bit of classic bling.
Solace has you covered wherever you are in your piercing journey.

Just like any other jewellery, how much effort you need to put into cleaning your bracelets comes down to what material they’re made out of.
For example, a solid gold bracelet or gold plated bracelet will require regular cleaning, sometimes with specialist cleaning fluid. Whilst a hard wearing gold PVD coated bracelet or a silver stainless steel bracelet will be a breeze in comparison. Here’s everything you need to know to get it right for each of the bracelets in your collection.
One of the biggest drawbacks to gold or gold plated jewellery is how easily it tarnishes.
This discolouration happens as a result of a process called oxidization; when the metal alloy the gold has been mixed with reacts with oxygen in the air causing it to corrode and deteriorate. The best way to keep this at bay is through regularly cleaning with the following method:
Fill a bowl with luke warm water and add a dash of washing up liquid (or specialist gold cleaning solution for particularly bad tarnishing).
Soak your gold bracelets in the solution for 15 to 20 minutes.
Using a specialist gold cleaning cloth or a small, soft brush like a toothbrush, gently scrub both the outside and inside of your bracelet until it’s clear of all dirt or grime. Pay special attention to any crevices, chain links and clasps to make sure it’s completely clean.
Rinse the bracelet under a tap and either leave to dry naturally or gently pat it with a kitchen towel.
To stay on top of tarnishing, you’ll need to repeat this process every month or so. But be careful. Gold is an extremely soft metal so excessive cleaning can cause scratches on the surface of your bracelet or you might distort the shape if it’s a gold bangle.
It’s especially important to avoid over-cleaning gold plated bracelets as you can slowly wear away the gold layer, exposing a potentially reactive metal underneath.
This is why you should also avoid swimming and showering in gold plated bracelets or any other gold plated jewellery.
If you want to achieve the exact same on-trend look to gold without the high maintenance, it's time to switch to gold PVD coated stainless steel. Physical Vapour Deposition, or PVD, is a vacuum coating process that applies a tough and durable gold coating to bracelets and other jewellery for a finish that’s immune to oxidisation making it tarnish resistant.
From our gold rope chain bracelet to our chunky open bangle gold cuff bracelet, all our gold range is PVD coated.
And we’ll let you into another secret. Not only is the luxurious shine of PDV incredibly long-lasting, it’s hypoallergenic too!
Just like gold, silver is another precious metal that requires frequent cleaning as its prone to tarnishing.
The method for cleaning is much the same as the above for gold; leave your silver bracelet to soak in warm, mild soapy water, gently scrub and then pat dry.
If the dirt and grime is being stubborn or it’s a particularly chunky silver bracelet, then you can swap the soap and water for a mixture of white vinegar and baking powder.
First, cover your silver bracelet with a healthy amount of vinegar.
Then add a couple of tablespoons of baking soda.
Leave for about an hour and then rinse clean and pat dry with a soft cloth.
Want the sleek glam of silver without the tarnishing? We’ve got you covered.
Silver stainless steel is totally resistant to corrosion which means it won’t discolour however much you wear it.
It’s also completely water and sweat proof so your bracelets will stay looking fresh even if you shower or workout in them.
Because of this, you’ll only really need to clean your stainless steel bracelets whenever they’re looking a little dull.
This can happen when there’s a buildup of everyday dirt or make-up. But there’s no need for hour long soakings.
All you need to do is wipe your stainless steel jewellery clean with a wet, soft cloth taking care to wipe inside any chain links (like those you’ll find on our silver paper clip chain bracelet) and you’re good to go. It couldn’t be easier!
You need to take extra care when cleaning bracelets containing precious gemstones as you risk scratching their surface if they’re particularly soft.
This is especially true for delicate gems such as amber or the popular pearl.
In these cases, try to use an non-abrasive polishing cloth to carefully work around the stones after cleaning any metal components with soapy water.
If you want to the glamour of pearls without their delicate impracticalities, then freshwater pearls are your best bet. This is because the nacre layer of freshwater pearls is thicker, making them more durable.
You can find the perfect examples of these timeless beauties on our beaded pearl bracelets.
It stands to reason that bracelets with beads or charms are always going to be slightly more tricky to clean than say your PDV gold bangles as beads have more surface area to collect dirt.
Our clarity stone beaded bracelets, for example, are designed to be worn every day to promote mental clarity, emotional balance and inner peace so you’ll want to make sure give them a clean now and again.
Luckily, they can be quickly restored to their shimmering beauty with the help of some warm, mild soapy water and a soft brush.
Unlike most beaded bracelets that come with a delicate string band that can break during clearing, ours are made with a durable stainless steel rope chain that’s completely waterproof. So you don’t need to worry about tarnishing either!
So there you have it, give your bracelets a boost with a bit of gentle cleaning. And remember, nothing beats stainless steel when it comes to low maintenance, high reward!

We’ve talked a lot about celebrating relationships with other people. But what about celebrating the most important relationship of all – the one with yourself!
Luckily, there is a day that’s designed to help with that too. Singles Awareness Day is an unofficial, tongue- in-cheek holiday which invites you to embrace the freedom of being single and focus on YOU!
It’s an important reminder that you don’t need a partner to happy. You’re still significant with or without a “significant other.”
Singles Awareness Day is celebrated the day after Valentines Day on February 15th. Which makes it the perfect antidote to the previous days’ focus on romantic love.
Focus your celebrations around self-care, self-love, and embracing your single status.
Here are some ideas.
Treat yourself to a spa day, your favourite foods, or simply a relaxing bath (with plenty of bubbles and essential oils!). This is your excuse to self-indulge!
Find space to reflect on your personal growth and achievements. Write down positive affirmations to remind you of your strength.
Take yourself out on a date and enjoy a day at a museum or in your favourite café. Or do what makes you happy whether it’s reading a book or watching your favourite show on Netflix.
Now’s the time to treat yourself to something you’d usually only gift other people. Think a pretty bunch of flowers. Or better still, an everlasting piece of floral jewellery – check out our daisy stud earrings or daisy hypoallergenic ring for ideas!
We might be biased, but we think spoiling ourselves with a new piece of jewellery is about as good as it gets. So, you know that bit of something sparkly you’ve had your eye on? Go on, add it to your basket.
Or celebrate your place in the world by gifting yourself one of our on-trend zodiac tarot card necklaces or zodiac constellation necklaces. Both are available as a silver chain necklace or gold chain necklace.
Oh, and one last thing! Who says you need to be single to practice self-love? You can still spend the day celebrating what makes you unique even if you have a partner.
So there you have it, our complete guide to spreading a bit of love this February!
Here's some of our favourites we've mentioned in this blog!
It’s completely natural to feel a little sad or low at the start of a new year. We’re waking up in the dark, it’s cold outside and we’re trying to get back into the swing of things after Christmas. So, it’s not surprising that most people call January the most challenging month of the year.
But there are ways to keep your spirits up and embrace the positives of the season. That’s why we’ve put together these 10 January Blues-beating tips to help you have the best start to 2024.
With the sun rising so late and setting so early, you’re naturally going to feel like curling up in bed more. Giving yourself permission to just that can have a positive impact on your mental health.
According to the national sleep foundation, adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep every night to stay healthy. Anything below this can have a negative impact on your mood and contribute to you feeling low at this time of year.
So don’t be too hard on yourself if you find it difficult to get up in the morning. Allow yourself that bit of extra time in bed if you can. Or if you feel like an early night or an after-work snooze, then go for it! One of our favourite things about our range of hypoallergenic stainless steel studs and hoops is that they’re perfectly safe to sleep in so you can be nap-ready whenever the mood takes you.
If you’re finding that the quality of your sleep is an issue, then get into a good habit of reducing screen time before bed to help your brain wind down from the day. Speaking of which…
Tech-free time does wonders for your mental health. It’s been proven that spending too much time on our devices can cause physical and emotional damage as it contributes to symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as headaches and vision problems.
Social media especially can have a negative impact on our general wellbeing as you risk replacing genuine human interaction with a false sense of connection online. Don’t get us wrong. We love keeping up with our bestie’s Insta stories. But it’s no replacement for seeing them in real life! And too much time scrolling means we have less time to pursue our passions and interests.
If you’re finding it difficult to stop reaching for your phone, fidget rings are a great way to keep your hands busy and focus your brain on something else. Our fidget rings have spinning outer bands or spinning flowers, suns and other designs that you can play with to distract your mind from bad habits like doom scrolling!
Phones aren’t the only culprit either – too much gaming and TV can also leave us feeling disconnected. After all, our bodies are made to move, not stare at a screen. We also need chill out time to just be.
It’s easy to feel like modern day life is all go go go. Especially with packed diaries, hectic social lives and never ending “to do” lists. But it’s important to allow yourself some space to relax and unwind without time pressure or the thought of needing to be somewhere.
This could be reading a book or taking a relaxing bath or shower. You can elevate your bathing routine by adding in some calming eucalyptus. You may choose to hang fresh leaves or get the same effect by using Naturally Tribal’s Oroma bodywash which includes the antioxidant properties of both eucalyptus and orange. You can find this and other products in our beauty section.
Trying a spot of meditation using one of our Chakra necklaces is another great way to make space for quiet time. This can be daunting if you’ve never done it before but it’s one of the best things you can do to give yourself a moment to just be you.
Find a quiet spot. Sit and focus on your breathing and imagine a light flooding your body from the top of your head to your toes. Wearing Chakra stones, like those on our heart chakra power stone necklace, will help you cleanse any feelings that are stopping you from feeling balanced in your mind or body. It might feel strange at first, but you’ll soon feel like you’ve been kissed by a breath of fresh air each time you do it. We also have some beautiful clarity stone beaded bracelets which are great to wear as a daily reminder to find some time for mindfulness in everyday life.
You’ve probably heard the saying; “a tidy home is a tidy mind” Well there’s actually plenty of truth in it. Having a clear out can have a really positive impact on your mood as it comes with a feeling of space and freedom.
Overhauling your whole home can feel overwhelming so start small and be methodical. Take each room at a time. Look through your cupboards and get rid of anything you’ve not used in a year or more. Be ruthless (do you really need 14 mugs?). Then it’s time to tackle that jumbled drawer of necklaces. Our range of super cute jewellery cases come in different styles and sizes so you can finally store all your gold stud earrings, gold rings and gold chain necklaces safely in one place without them getting lost or tangled.
Lastly, spend some time sorting out your wardrobe and accessories. That way you can make some space for any new additions in 2024. Once you’re done, you can either donate your unwanted items to charity, head to a clothes swap or sell them on for a bit of extra post-Christmas cash!
There’s no better feeling that the sense of achievement that comes with learning a new skill or trying something you’ve always wanted to do. It’s a real boost for both your confidence and your mood.
So have a think. Is there something you’ve wanted to try for ages but never quite got round to it? Or something you once started but life got in the way?
Well now’s the perfect time to invite those passions into your life. It’s proven that getting creative can reduce your stress levels so why not get adventurous with your cooking, learn a new language, give a craft a go or take up a dance class.
Or how about getting that nose piercing you’ve always dreamt of? Or experimenting with your style? Now could be the time to take the plunge and really express yourself.
Whether it’s a rock chick hypoallergenic cartilage stud or pair of glam gold threader earrings, an edgy gold choker necklace or some sophisticated huggie earrings, Solace has got what you need to embrace that fiercely 'you' style in 2024.
Whilst we’re on the subject of trying something new, taking up a sport or exercising more is another great way to beat the January blues.
Regular exercise is proven to relieve stress and anxiety, improve energy levels and boost your self-esteem. This is because your brain releases endorphins during physical activity which contributes to feelings of happiness and wellbeing.
For some people, regular exercise might be going to the gym or a fitness class. For others, it could be more gentle activities like swimming, yoga or even a short lunchtime walk.
However you choose to get up and move, we have the ideal accessories to match. All our stainless-steel jewellery (including our 3-piece everyday earring set that’s perfect for working out) is 100% sweat proof and waterproof. So you can look good and feel good at the same time.
What you eat can make a big difference to your mood. When we feel down, we’re more likely to dive into the snack cupboard for something sugary.
Enjoying treats is absolutely essential, but you can improve how you feel by eating a varied diet that includes things high in vitamins like oily fish and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in between those more indulgent snacks!
Once Christmas is over, we often find it harder to find space to practise self-care but designating some time to take care of ourselves is essential to improving our mood. You don’t need to splash out on expensive spas when you can recreate the experience at home.
Think surrounding yourselves by scented candles, brewing herbal teas and investing in some quality pamper products.
And there’s quick and easy ways to add self-care to your daily routine too. Try adopting a three step routine of cleanse, tone and moisturise - keeping it short and simple makes prioritising a few moments to look after yourself super easy. You’ll have glowing skin in no time by doing this for 5 minutes in the morning and again before bed.
Enjoy your me-time!
When the buzz of Christmas is over and you’re feeling a little deflated, make plans to surround yourself with people who lift you up. Whether it’s family or friends, why not suggest grabbing a coffee and taking a walk round the park or simply inviting them round for a catch up?
And whether you’ll be dressing up or down for the occasion, our everyday hoop earrings or ultra glam teardrop pendant necklaces have got your back.
Don’t forget about loved ones further afield either. You could arrange a zoom call or pick up the phone. Or if you’re suffering from digital fatigue, how about sending a letter accompanied by a small gesture such as one of our £4 initial pendants to show you’re thinking about them. Doing something kind for others gives ourselves a boost too.
We know it’s easier said than done when you’re caught up in the demands of everyday life, but finding time for those connections will ease feelings of isolation and make yourself and others feel loved.
That said, be aware of stretching yourself too thin. It’s ok to say no to plans if you need some time off. Like turning down after work drinks if it means you’ll have more energy to meet up with your besties at the weekend. Find the right balance for you.
One of the main reasons that people suffer from the January Blues is the lack of daylight. Not getting enough sunlight and that all important Vitamin D has been shown to impact our mood and leaves us feeling low.
So, make sure to maximise your exposure to natural light as much as possible where you can. Sit by the window whilst you’re working, take a lunchtime stroll round your neighbourhood or plan a weekend nature walk.
And who says you’ve got to pack away those cosy fairly lights that have been bringing you so much cheer over Christmas? It doesn’t need to be dark and dreary just because the festive season is over. Keep a bit of twinkly magic going as long as you like and even bring it into your wardrobe with some sparkly CZ jewellery or celestial inspired pieces like our sparkle star pendant necklace.
Make up for the lack of sunshine in other ways too like dressing in bright and vibrant colours. Find fun and funky things to wear that make you feel good and bring a smile to you face like our sweetie hypoallergenic gold bracelet or colourful daisy huggies. Or how about our golden sun stainless steel studs? These hypoallergenic gold earrings are a reminder that some glorious spring sunshine will be with us again soon.
So, there you have our top 10 tips for beating the January blues. Just remember to take each day as it comes. Listen to your head and your heart to find out what you need. And find time to be proud of yourself for each small thing you do to get 2024 off to a positive start.

Here's some of our favourites we've mentioned in this blog!
Wearing jewellery is one of the best ways to elevate an outfit or show off your personal style. But for some of us, that means running the risk of skin rashes, itchy bumps, redness or dry patches. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Luckily, there are things that even those with metal allergies or sensitive skin can do so they can still wear stylish pieces with the help of hypoallergenic choices.
Everybody’s skin is different. So when it comes to jewellery, there are different types of allergies and sensitivities people can experience. Nickel is a common culprit. But it’s also possible to be allergic to copper, brass and even more expensive metals like platinum. Which is why one of the best ways to tackle a reaction is to find out exactly what is causing it so you can avoid jewellery that contains that metal in future.
Chat to your GP and see if they are able to perform a patch test to identify the specific allergen. Then once you have a better understanding of what your skin is sensitive to, you can choose suitable jewellery options that are right for you.
Here at our Solace, 95% of our customers are able to wear our medical grade stainless steel jewellery without a reaction. But don’t worry if you’re in the 5% that can’t. Our range also features implant grade titanium jewellery and pure titanium jewellery. Titanium allergies are extremely rare even in people sensitive to other metals.
Although high street bought jewellery can be fun to wear in the short term, it’s important to remember that it’s purposely manufactured from low quality metals like nickel to make it less expensive.
Luckily, turning your back on costume jewellery shouldn’t be difficult. Not when stainless steel hypoallergenic jewellery is a fantastic alternative for affordable, everyday jewellery. And you don’t have to compromise on the style stakes either.
Our range features all the hottest trends such as silver and gold huggie hoops, gold stacking rings and gold chains and chokers.
Unfortunately, it’s not just costume jewellery that can cause problems. Even precious metals like gold and silver can cause reactions. That’s because manufactures will add nickel or other reactive metals to precious metal to improve its strength.
With gold, it’s true that the higher the Karat, the less likely you are to have a reaction. But only pure gold is completely risk free and that is too weak to hold its shape as jewellery. Be especially weary of any jewellery less that 14K as it’s highly likely to contain troublesome nickel or brass.
If you love the look of gold but don’t want to run the risk of a reaction, our PVD coated stainless steel is the perfect replacement. From gold stud earrings to gold birthstone necklaces, almost every piece in our range is available in on-trend gold.
There are a couple of things you can do to find out what metal your jewellery is made out of. Any Nickel lurking in jewellery often gives itself away with the greenish or brown stain that is leaves behind on the skin.
Other metals though can be harder to detect so you may want to try out a metal testing kit. These come with a set of solutions that you rub onto jewellery to identify the type of metals and their purity. Just pour a small amount of the liquid onto some cotton wool and wipe it on any part of the jewellery. The solution will then change a certain colour depending on what metal it contains. Metal testing kits are particularly useful if you’re wanting to wear a vintage or antique piece that you don’t know much about.
Sometimes even jewellery made from high quality metals feature clasps, hooks or backs that are made from cheaper metals to reduce costs. This is especially problematic for earrings where the posts are what come into contact with the skin the most. Luckily, you don’t need to worry about that with any of Solace’s pieces as each and every part of our jewellery is made from hypoallergenic stainless steel or titanium.
Titanium is another fantastic metal for those with sensitive skin as less than 0.6% of people are allergic to it! Implant grade titanium earrings are what’s called biocompatible – meaning it won’t be rejected by the body – which makes it ideal for piercings. And because it’s a non-reactive metal, titanium won’t lose its shine by tarnishing over time either. Our collection of titanium earrings feature high quality titanium cartilage studs, trendy half hoop studs and timeless titanium studs in a variety of cute shapes.
You’ll find jewellery self-labelled as “hypoallergenic” or "allergy-free" all over the internet but it’s difficult to know what you’re getting from some manufacturers. In some instances, pieces may be advertised as hypoallergenic because they’ve had a thin coating applied to them. But the base metal could still contain nickel which can be exposed over time causing a reaction.
Luckily, you won’t have any of those issues if you shop with Solace. Everything from our bracelets to our cuffs, pendant necklaces to our fidget rings are made from the highest quality 316L stainless steel or titanium.
We’re so convinced that you’ll be 100% happy with our products that we even offer free returns and a in the very unlikely event our jewellery doesn’t work for you.

Hands up! How many of your little ones had their ears pierced over the summer holidays?
It’s a rite of passage that many tweens will have experienced thanks to the big six weeks holiday buying them some extra healing time before the start of another school year. But as we hurtle towards half term (seriously, how did that happen!?) it might be time to start thinking about swapping those starter earrings for something else. But how exactly do you change a child’s earrings for the first time? And what do you need to know before getting started? Let us explain.
The biggest piece of advice we can give you when changing your child’s earrings for the first time is to make absolutely sure that the piercing has healed. Taking out the earring before this can lead to a whole number of complications you definitely want to avoid.
As a general rule, you need to wait at least 6 weeks before you consider taking out your kids starter earrings. If, however, you child is experiencing a lot of pain or showing signs of an infection, you should consider removing the earrings straight away and see a doctor if things don’t improve.
Assuming that everything has healed as it should though, six weeks is the average amount of time that you need to wait until you can change out your child’s earrings for the first time. But remember. Everyone is different and some people’s ears take quite a bit longer to fully heal. So make sure you check before you take them out.
Fully healed piercings will have no sign of redness or swelling. Any pain should have completely subsided as should any natural discharge which can appear during the healing process. You should also be able to gently move the earring without causing any discomfort to your child. Give them the best chance of their piercing healing quickly by cleaning it regularly with water and mild, fragrance-free soap.
Taking out an earring before your child’s ear has fully healed can lead to a nasty infection, permanent swelling and in some cases, the body rejecting any new piece of jewellery you try to put in. In some cases, an unhealed ear can effectively “swallow” new jewellery which will then need removing by a professional.
If you remove earrings too early but don’t put in new jewellery, the earlobe can simply close back up, wasting the time and money you put into getting your child’s ears pierced in the first place.
So you’ve checked your little one’s piercing and everything is looking like it’s healed nicely. Now what? You still run the danger of causing a few tears if you aren’t ultra careful when changing your kids earrings for the first time. Follow these steps though and it will be a doddle.
Very little ones might be confused or scared when it’s time to change their earrings. Make sure you reinforce the message that there is nothing to fear and explain that keeping calm and still will help things go a lot more smoothly. Let the excitement of wearing a brand-new pair of pretty earrings outweigh any anxiety they might have.
Wash your hands thoroughly with mild soap and water before you touch your child’s ears. Tie your little one’s hair back if their hair is long and then use a clean cloth and fresh soap and water to gently wipe around their piercing. This will make sure the ear is free of any dirt or dead skin cell buildup that might otherwise get into the piercing if it’s not 100% healed.
Chances are your child’s first earring is a classic stud earring with a push back closing (also known as a butterfly back). To remove these types of earrings, gently pinch the back and apply gentle pressure until it slides all the way along and off the post. Then gently pull the front of the earring forward so the post glides through and free of the ear.
In some cases, your kids first earrings may have a safety back instead. These feature a locking design which help hold the earrings securely in place. But this extra security does mean you need to be slightly more hands on when taking them out.
With one hand, hold the earring post between your index finger and your thumb.
Then, using your other hand, either pull off the backing or unscrew it depending on the design.
LOX secure earring backs are some of the easiest safety back earrings to remove as you simply need to gently squeeze the metal clip and guide it as it slides off easily.
On rare occasions, your child’s earring may seem like it’s stuck. This could be for a variety of reasons. In some cases, it can be caused by the shape of the lobe. If your child has thick or pronounced lobes, they can sometimes get lodged in the earrings.
Another reason could be that a build-up of skin cells, wax or other debris is clogging the piercing hole or has become attached to the earring itself. In both of these cases it may be possible to free the earring by pouring some warm (but not hot) water over the hole.
If this isn’t enough, you can also try delicately wiping a very small amount of baby oil onto the piercing hole using a cotton bud. If that still doesn’t work, you might want to consider visiting a professional who will have specialist tools to remove problem jewellery. It’s worth noting that this is exceptionally rare and you’ll be able to remove the majority of stud earrings first time with no fuss.
So you’ve done it! The earrings are out and your little one can’t wait to show off a brand new pair. But what do you still need to consider when it comes to high quality and risk free kids earrings.
Here’s our top tips.
Even after their ears have healed, you should avoid buying cheap kids costume jewellery as it may contain nickel or other irritants that your child’s young skin could react to.
Choose a hypoallergenic option, like stainless steel, that will be gentle on delicate ears instead. Not only is stainless steel perfect for kids ears, it comes with the added benefit of being easy on the bank balance.
There’s no need to spend big money on silver earrings or gold earrings just to watch them tarnish over time.
Not when you can shop our collection of high quality, and just as stunning, stainless steel jewellery that will stay looking radiant as your little one grows.
It’s best to avoid dangly children's earrings even when their piercing has healed. The reasons for this are twofold. Firstly, the weight of drop earrings can put too much pressure on your little one’s lobes and can cause them to become misshapen. Secondly, they’re very impractical. Don’t run the risk of them falling out, or worse still, tearing your child’s piercing when you can opt for fuss free stainless steel stud earrings instead.
If you want to achieve the same drop look without the risks, huggie hoops are a great option for kids. We have a fantastic range of both mini gold huggie hoop earrings and silver huggie hoops that are perfect for little ears.
Here at Solace, we know kids stud earrings should be as fun and unique as your child is. Which is why our range is packed with quirky and colourful stainless steel studs that they can mix and match to your hearts content now that their piercings have healed.
Geometric designs such as our Mini Star or Gerbera Daisy stud earrings are a great option for school. As are our regular Love Heart and Mini Open Heart shaped studs, both of which are available as silver stud earrings or gold stud earrings. For a full range of school-friendly studs for kids, you can take a look here.
But when it comes to letting their personalities shine through, you can’t top our funky range of novelty earrings, such as the colourful studs for kids.
For nature buffs and animal lovers, we’ve got everything from bee, butterfly or cute koala studs. Then there’s our colourful unicorn studs for little fairytale lovers. Or help them embrace spooky season with our range of Halloween stud earrings.
Whatever style they choose, you can rest assured that all our stainless steel studs can be kept in for as long as they want.

Huggie earrings, also known as huggie hoops, are a style of hoop earring designed to sit close to your earlobe. As the name suggests, this snug fit makes it look like they’re softly hugging your ear.
They’re smaller in diameter than traditional hoops but typically retain a thickish ring for a chunky yet ultra comfortable finish. The fact that they sit tight to the ear means they’re perfect for everyday wear as they won’t snag or get caught in your hair or clothes. Their modern design also elevates any look without being too extravagant. So they won’t draw focus away from the overall outfit.
At Solace, we offer a wide range of hypoallergenic hoops including stainless steel gold huggies and silver huggies. Beautifully designed and featuring embellishments such as pearls, gems and charms, our huggie hoops are perfect on their own or as part of a stacked ear.
Our range of huggie hoops have a few different closing styles. All are super easy to get to grips with so you can close them securely.
Some, like our mini heart huggie hoop earrings, have a sleek design where the pin slips into the hollow tube of the hoop. This gives them the appearance of a complete circle which is why they’re nicknamed continuous hoops or infinity earrings. Others, like our braided huggie hoop earrings, feature a latch back which snaps into place between two posts.
Most of our huggie hoops, however, feature a hinge mechanism which means they can be handily separated almost in half so there’s a nice big gap to work with when you’re putting them in. The clasp then slots back into place in the same way as a continuous hoop. You’ll find these closing mechanisms on all our dinky huggie hoops like our 1cm rounded shape gold huggie hoops and our mini CZ hypoallergenic huggies.
Despite their delicate size, hinged huggie hoops couldn’t be easier to put in if you follow these steps:
Carefully release the huggie hoop earring into two sections by gently pulling on one side.
Gently guide the bar right the way through your ear lobe.
Once threaded the whole way through your lobe, secure into place by pushing the earring back up towards the pin. Make sure it’s snapped back firmly into place or apply a little bit of gentle pressure until you hear a click.
Top tip: You may find using a magnified make-up mirror useful when putting in very small huggie hoops.
If your huggie hoops do not feature a hinge mechanism then you simply need to release the movable pin by applying some gentle pressure, thread it through your lobe and then secure back into either the latch mechanism or the hollow tube of the hoop depending on the style.
The simple answer is yes! You can wear your huggie earrings all day long without fear or irritation or snagging.
The fact that they’re so lightweight and snug to your ear means you don’t need to worry about your hair getting tangled or your clothes getting caught on exposed posts (like those on classic stud earrings). Which means you can also say goodbye to getting jabbed in the side of the neck during particularly enthusiastic hugs! In fact, huggies are so comfortable, you can have them in all day and you won’t feel like you’re wearing anything at all. All in all, they’re the perfect everyday piece.
You sure can! Huggies are probably one of the safest earrings to sleep in as their continuous design means there’s absolutely nothing to get caught in your hair, clothing or bedding. Just make sure that they sit absolutely flush against your ear. If they’re slightly bigger and dangle too much away from the lobe, then it’s best to take them out before bed.
This is yet another massive plus of huggie hoops. The same reasons that make them safe to sleep in also makes them the perfect accessory to complete your gym look. Their snug fit means you can be assured that they won’t get caught on your hair or be a distraction whilst you’re working out. Thinking of going swimming too? No problem.
All our stainless steel huggie earrings are 100% sweatproof and waterproof so you won’t need to take them out when you’re taking a dip or a post-workout shower.
Aside from their comfort, the next best thing about huggies is their versatility. No matter what your personal style is, you’re sure to find a huggie that suits both your look and the occasion. Here’s a few of our top tips to get the most out of them.
Huggie earrings are ideal for stacking and are an essential part of any curated ear style. Go edgy by stacking multiple gold huggie hoops on one ear. Or pair a single huggie hoop earring with one or more pair of gold stud earrings for an on-trend, asymmetrical look.
Just when you thought you couldn’t possibly love huggies any more, we’d like to let you into another style secret; huggies go with absolutely everything and compliment any outfit choice. Team them with jeans and a t-shirt for the perfect day look or dress them up with a slinky dress for a night out. They’ll make the perfect addition either way.
Despite being small in size, you can do a lot with the humble huggie. Consider playing around with some of these popular styles:
Plain huggie earrings are elegant and understated. They’re your perfect choice for everyday wear and you can still have fun with different textures such as our braided huggie hoops and textured huggies.
Not all huggies need to be a traditional circle. You can have fun by switching it up with different shaped bands. Our hexagon huggies, for example, put an ultra-cool spin on the style and will add rockstar quality to any look. Or be more playful with our heart shaped huggie earrings or star shaped huggies earrings.
CZ huggie earrings add a touch of glam to the occasion. You can opt for styles that have multiple gems set around the band of the hoop like our mini CZ hypoallergenic huggie. Or go for a single show-stopping gem like the ones on our CZ drop huggie hoops.
Pearls are another elegant option and the perfect choice for more formal settings. As such, pearl huggie hoops make the perfect wedding day accessories for modern brides. Ours come as both silver huggie hoop earrings and gold huggie hoop earrings to suit your individual style.
Feeling playful? We have a whole host of huggies featuring quirky charms to suit your vibe. There’s lightning bolt huggies for your inner rebel. Heart huggies for all the romantics out there and daisy huggies for nature lovers.
Or why not elevate your existing pair of huggies with our mix and match charms? These are available separately so you can switch it up depending on your mood. Our textured sun and moon charms are especially popular right now.
Please note, if buying charms alone, make sure you have some huggies or hoops to hook them onto!
Or why not both? You make the rules. Gold huggie earrings manage to be both an on-trend and classic choice at the same time. They go particularly well with anything black – whether that’s a leather jacket or a little black dress that’s ready to party.
Silver huggie earrings, on the other hand, are slightly more low key. They won’t look out of place anywhere whether it’s at work or at a friend’s gathering.
So there you have it, our complete guide to huggie hoops. That small but on point accessory that should be a staple of everyone’s jewellery collection this season and beyond.

EXPLORE OUR STACKING EARRINGS & RINGS
Fear not! We’re here to tell you all there is to know about the art of stacking rings.
It’s the trend that has everything covered – it’s cool, effortless and looks great with any ‘fit. Whether you’re all about chic, delicate bands or bold, show-stopping designs, this guide to stacking rings will help you take your jewellery game up a notch.
Think of stacked rings as jewellery’s answer to the pick and mix. It’s a trend that allows you to wear a whole bunch of your favourite pieces together to create a look that’s both chic and understatedly cool.
As the name suggests, stacking rings involves curating a look on one or more fingers using multiple rings on top of each other. This might be all gold stacked rings or all silver stacked rings or a combination of them both. The beauty is that you have the freedom to use different shapes, sizes and colours to create an endless number of bold combos. But where should you start first?
Despite what you might think, you can completely nail ring stacking without breaking the bank. That’s because there are only four different styles that you’ll need to give yourself limitless stacking options: statement rings, delicate rings, stacking rings and midi rings. Let us tell you more about each one.
A statement ring can be anything from a paved eternity ring to a signet type style like our daisy hypoallergenic ring. Make one of these pieces the focal point on your finger and build the rest of your stack using other rings that complement it.
Dainty and minimalistic rings are your best friends when it comes to stacking rings. Look out for rings that have thin bands and subtle details such as our CZ Star and Moon rings. These are perfect for layering together and will add an elegant touch to any look.
Stacking rings are simple, plain bands that have been specifically designed to sit on top of each other with ease. These could have either a smooth finish like our wavy stackable ring or be textured like our braided stackable ring.
Midi Rings are designed to be worn on the middle of your finger or you can achieve the same look by buying an unembellished ring in a smaller size to your usual ring size. Our zig zag hypoallergenic ring would work particularly well for this.
Now you’ve got the components of a ring stack down, let’s get into how to combine them!
Stacking multiple rings on every finger probably isn’t going to give you that fashion blogger style you’re looking for. It’s likely to look a little messy and you’ll find it’s pretty impractical (especially if you need to use a keyboard!).
Instead, we recommend choosing one or two statement fingers and building your look around those. One of our favourite curated looks is to stack two or three rings on the same finger and then compliment it with one single ring on either side. Keeping at least one finger bare is also a good way to ensure that the details of each ring remain the key focus.
Once you’ve had some fun getting all your favourite gold rings stacked, it’s time to get even more adventurous. It might have once been considered a fashion no-no to mix your metals but nowadays we’re all about blending silvers and golds to create a look that says you do things your way. This tip works particularly well with minimal bands where the finish is what draws the eye.
Try and achieve some balance by dispersing the colours evenly across your fingers rather than bunching them altogether. Almost all of the rings in our collection are available as a gold ring or silver ring option so you can get as creative as you like. Consider also adding both a silver bangle and gold bangle to tie the look together.
Now is your time to be playful with different band weights and sizes. Wider bands look great when paired with thin, textured ones. Don’t be afraid to mix different aesthetic styles either. For example, mixing the crisp lines of our textured heart hypoallergenic ring with the whimsical curves of our adjustable wavy ring would create an interesting contrast. The best rule is to have no rules – that way you’ll find your signature combination by doing things differently.
Looking to spice up your evening look? Try adding some CZ sparkle to your ring stack. We have multiple CZ paved ring options for this, all of which could be elevated to glam perfection between two plain bands. We recommend sticking to clear crystals instead of coloured gems to keep the look balanced and sleek.
By its very design, the stacking ring trend is going to draw attention to your hands. So once you’ve got your rings stacked you’ll want to make sure your nails are also part of the overall look. We recommended keeping them as natural as possible with a neutral shade of polish so as not to detract from the gorgeous pieces on your fingers. Or if you’re feeling bold, why not make a statement with a chic metallic colour for some uber cool edge.
You’ll also want to avoid overloading your jewellery elsewhere to allow the rings to take centre stage. A pair of timeless stud earrings and a delicate gold chain necklace are our top picks.
Ultimately, stacking rings is all about making a statement. And whatever that statement is should reflect your personal style.
Whether you purely opt for dainty and minimalistic bands or mix it up with embellishments and textures, the choice is yours.
Aim to do whatever feels like a good fit for you and have fun stacking those rings your own way!

EXPLORE ALL RINGS & EARRINGS
Who doesn’t love the lustre and shine of a gold ring? There’s no denying they add that perfect golden pop to the most basic of ‘fits. But when it comes to keeping gold rings looking their best, you can have a real challenge on your hands. It all depends on what exact metal your gold rings are made out of. Solid gold rings or gold plated rings are pretty high maintenance and require frequent cleaning, sometimes with specialist products.
On the other hand (or should that be finger?), gold PVD coated rings are a doddle; only requiring the most basic of surface cleans every now and then.
Read on to find out which cleaning method is best for your collection.
One of the biggest drawbacks to gold or gold plated jewellery is how susceptible it is to tarnishing. This discolouration happens because of a process called oxidisation; when the metal alloy the gold has been mixed with reacts with oxygen causing it to corrode and deteriorate. This is true for all precious metals and something that gets worse over time due to the unavoidable daily exposure to oxygen in the air. The best way to keep this at bay is by regularly cleaning your gold jewellery, but this can come with its own issues that we’ll explore later.
If you want to achieve the exact same stunning look to gold without the nightmare upkeep, it's time to switch to gold PVD coated stainless steel. Physical Vapour Deposition, or PVD, is a vacuum coating process that applies an extremely durable gold coating to jewellery for a finish that’s immune to oxidisation and tarnish resistant. Not only is this luxurious shine incredibly long-lasting, it’s hypoallergenic too!
As a general rule, you’ll need to clean your gold or gold plated rings every couple of weeks to keep on top of tarnishing. But be careful. Gold is an extremely soft metal so overcleaning can cause it to become scratched, lose it’s shape and eventually degrade. It’s especially important to avoid overcleaning gold plated jewellery as it isn’t water-resistant. If you expose gold plated jewellery to too much water, it can damage and discolour the gold layer until it eventually wears off and exposes the metal underneath. This is why you should also avoid swimming and showering in gold plated jewellery, including rings.
Gold stainless steel rings (including our best-selling daisy ring) are completely sweat and moisture resistant meaning they’ll stay looking their best no matter how much you wear them. So you’ll barely ever have to worry about cleaning them at all!
Unless your gold rings are especially old and tarnished, it should be possible to clean them using household items that are relatively easy to get hold of. But you may need to step it up a notch for particularly stubborn discolouration. Here’s our top tips for different types of gold.
First things first, there is no such thing as a 100% gold ring as pure gold would be far too soft to wear as jewellery. Instead, all solid gold rings are mixed with another alloy to make it more durable. The higher the carat, the more actual gold the piece contains and the more careful you should be to avoid bending your ring during the following cleaning process:
Fill a bowl with luke warm water and add a few drops of washing up liquid.
Soak your rings in the solution for 10 to 15 minutes.
Using a specialist gold cleaning cloth or small, soft brush like a toothbrush, gently scrub both the outside and inside of your ring until it’s clear of any dirt or grime.
Rinse the ring under a tap and leave to dry naturally or gently pat it with a kitchen towel.
Top tip: The same process can be used for all types of gold jewellery including gold earrings or a gold chain.
No. Unlike Coca Cola, this often cited cleaning tip is actually false. Toothpaste is abrasive so it can do more harm than good by scratching or damaging soft metals like gold and silver.
Gold plated rings should only be cleaned infrequently using the soapy water method above. Do not use any other solutions that might cause the gold layer to wear away and expose the base metal underneath the plating. Not only will this spoil the colour of the ring, but it can be problematic for those with sensitive skin if the metal underneath contains nickel. It should be noted that any gold plating will eventually wear away over time but over washing it, using harsh cleaning chemicals or a hard brush will only speed up the process.
Really old or severely tarnished gold rings or those containing precious gems like diamonds can be much trickier to clean to home. In these cases, you will need to take them to a professional jeweller who may use an ultrasonic, steam or ionic cleaner to get your gold ring clean. Be warned though, this can be costly depending on where you go.
We wouldn’t blame you if you were now questioning if gold rings are really worth so much hassle. Especially when there is a cost effective and super low maintenance alternative.
As already mentioned, the gold PVD coating process creates a hypoallergenic finish that’s 10x thicker than gold plating meaning it won’t fade or tarnish. It’s also completely water and sweat resistant so your jewellery will stay looking fresh no matter how much you wear it. Because of this, you’ll only really need to clean your stainless steel ring whenever it’s looking a little dull from everyday buildup like makeup or dirt. All you need to do is wipe it clean with a soft cloth and a little soapy water, taking care to wipe inside any grooves (like those you’ll find on our textured heart ring) and you’re good to go. It couldn’t be easier!
Solace has a fabulous range of gold PVD stainless steel rings for you to mix and match to suit your style. One of our favourites at the mo is the CZ star and moon gold stacking rings set. This cute duo have been designed to be worn on the same finger for an on-trend curated vibe. Also check our zig zag gold stacking ring and adjustable wavy gold hypoallergenic stackable ring to complete the look. Or if bling’s more you’re thing we’ve got you covered with our two CZ gold paved rings which come in either a chevron or cross style.

HAVE YOU SEEN OUR EARRINGS?
Anyone with sensitive skin knows how challenging it can be to wear any kind of jewellery, especially earrings. That’s because the nickel found in a lot of metals, such as silver and gold, reacts with the skin and causes that dreaded redness, itching or swelling. Luckily though, there are hypoallergenic metals that are much less likely to cause an allergic reaction. One of the most popular hypoallergenic metals for jewellery is medical grade stainless steel. The vast majority of our customers (95%+) are able to wear our 316L stainless steel jewellery without trouble even if they’ve suffered allergic reactions to jewellery in the past.
But what do you do if you’re in the small percentage of people that can’t wear stainless steel? Titanium jewellery could well be the answer. Let us tell you more.
Titanium earrings are some of the best on the market for sensitive ears. In its purest form, titanium is a completely biocompatible metal. This means that it can come into contact with your skin without causing a reaction or irritation. For further peace of mind, it’s worth noting that most medical implants are made from titanium as it can live in harmony with your body without causing any issues.
The short answer is no, titanium earrings do not contain nickel. The longer answer is a little more complicated.
There is a slight catch that some jewellery manufacturers may advertise that they sell titanium earrings but in actual fact their products are made of a titanium alloy. These alloys can contain trace amounts of nickel which could cause a reaction for some people. This is why it’s important to do your research when shopping for titanium earrings.
Here at Solace, we only use unalloyed, implant grade or pure titanium to create our jewellery. Medical professionals consider both of these to be nickel free. Which means you can look glam in a pair of our gemstone titanium stud earrings even if you’ve experienced allergic reactions to other jewellery in the past.
Although it is extremely rare, it is not completely impossible to be allergic to titanium earrings. In a tiny minority of cases, some people have experienced an allergic reaction to titanium but this is an exceptionally infrequent occurrence. So much so that titanium remains the worldwide recommended metal for medical implants even for those who have experienced reactions to other metals such as stainless steel.
No. Titanium jewellery will not tarnish or corrode. Titanium is an incredibly strong and durable metal that will stand the test of time. In fact, titanium has the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metallic element. This means it’s tough yet exceptionally lightweight and comfortable to wear. It’s also completely waterproof so there’s no need to take out your titanium earrings when you swim or shower either.
If your titanium earrings do start to look a little dull from everyday dirt and grime, all you need to do is soak them in a bowl of mild soap and water then wipe clean with a soft cloth. Leave them to dry naturally and their shine will be back in an instant!
We firmly believe that skin-friendly jewellery doesn’t need to be boring, so you’ll find a gorgeous range of on-trend titanium earrings as part of our collection here at Solace.
If it’s classic studs you’re after, we have ball studs in both 5mm and 3mm sizes.
These look great together when recreating the curated ear trend in dual pierced lobes. You can also get playful with heart, stars or moon shape studs. All of which are also available in gold thanks to fact that Titanium can be anodised. Anodising creates a thin oxide layer which is just as biocompatible as polished titanium. Or how about a bit of sparkle? Our prong set CZ titanium stud earrings have got you covered on that front too.
And you’re not limited to studs either. Check out our gorgeous double lined CZ segment hoops (sold individually) or small titanium half hoops. Both of which are sure to elevate any outfit from a day look to after work drinks. But if you really want to make a statement, you’ll love our large 25mm iridescent rainbow titanium hoop earrings.

Push backs (also known as butterfly backs) are the classic type of closing for stud earrings. But it’s not uncommon to also see them on hoops.
Putting them in is nice and easy following these steps:
• Slide the small butterfly back off the post of your hoop earring.
• Carefully guide the post of your hoop through your ear piercing until it’s all the way out of the other side at the back.
• Push the back onto the post and slide it until it sits comfortably behind your ear. Make sure it’s secure enough so it won’t fall off but not too tight to cause discomfort.
Want to try out this style? All our classic half hoop earrings feature a push back style closing. They come as 15mm, 30mm and 50mm hoops to suit your taste as well as chunky hoops for when you want that extra bit of glam. Our popular huggie star or heart hoop earrings also feature a push back style closing.
How To Put In Continuous Hoop Earrings?
Continuous hoops are known by a few different names such as infinity earrings or endless hoop earrings. All refer to the same style closing where a small pin slips into the hollow tube of the hoop.
Put them in using this method:
• Open up the hoop by gently applying pressure to the side of your continuous hoop earring. You’re better doing this as a gentle pull back and then a small twist motion to the side so there’s just enough room for your earlobe to fit in the gap. Avoid pulling the pin too far back as this can misshape your earrings.
• Carefully thread the pin all the way through your ear.
• Using your other hand, gently guide the hoop back to the pin so that they’re realigned. Slot the pin back into the hollow tube of the hoop.
Want to try out this style? Our huggie open heart hoop earrings have that chic, endless hoop look that’s sure to elevate any outfit.
How To Put in Latch Back Hoop Earrings?
Latch back hoop earrings are also commonly known as clasped hoop earrings. They feature a bar that can be slotted securely into place between a pronged fixture on the other side of the earring.
Use these tips to put them in:
• Gently free the movable bar by snapping it up out of the prongs on your hoop earring.
• Thread the bar all the way through your ear lobe from the front to the back.
• Gentle push the free hanging part of the hoop back up towards the bar so it meets with the fastening clasp feature.
• Gentle push the bar down into the clasp until it makes a secure click.
Want to try out this style? Our every-day hoop earrings feature this latch clasp style. They come in 7 different sizes starting at 10mm and going up to 50mm. All of which are available as gold hoop earrings, silver hoop earring and rose gold hoop earrings. Personalise any of your everyday hoops with our charms that come in funky shapes like suns, moons, hearts and lightening bolts.
How to Put In Hinged Hoop Earrings?
As the name suggests, hinged hoops have a hinge mechanism which allows them to be separated almost in half. This makes them one of the easiest styles of hoops to put in as they give you a nice big gap to work with. The clasp itself might either snap back into place similar to a continuous hoop or, in rarer cases, feature a latch clasp.
This is how you put them in:
• Gently release the hoop earring into two parts by pulling gently on one side.
• Carefully guide the pin all the way through your ear.
• Once the pin is all the way through, close the hinge by pushing the free part of the hoop back up towards the pin.
• Depending on the style, this will then snap, clasp or slot back together.
What to try out this style? Look no further than our 1.5cm chunky hoop earrings. Bag this perfectly formed style as either a pair of small gold hoop earrings or small silver hoop earrings to suit your look.
How To Put In Huggie Hoops?
By design, huggie hoops are a small, delicate style of earring that sits close to the earlobe. They are most likely to feature a hinge closing like the one described above but their petite size can make them that little bit more fiddly.
Here’s how to put them in right every time:
• Carefully release the huggie hoop earring into two parts by pulling gently on one side.
• Gently thread the bar all the way through your ear.
• Once all the way through, secure into place by pushing the huggie hoop back up towards the bar.
• This will then snap back into place but you may need to apply a bit more gentle pressure until you hear a click.
• Because of their dainty size, some people find using a magnified make-up mirror particularly helpful when putting in huggie hoops.
What to try out this style? From daisy drops to hexagon shapes, chain drops to mini hearts, Solace has a wide range of on-trend huggie hoop earrings as part of our collection. Looking for a gift? Pearl hoop earrings in particular make for a beautiful gesture so you’ll be spoilt for choice with our pearl set, pearl drop or mini pearl huggies.

Is there anything more frustrating than going to grab your favourite necklace only to find it knotted up with all your other chains? Cue spending what can be literally hours trying to untangle the dreaded mess. Surely there has to be an easier way to deal with this testing situation than tediously picking at stubborn knots with our long suffering nails? Well, yes, in fact there is. And there isn’t just 1 method, there’s 4! All using simple everyday items you can find at home. So come with us and discover these top tips for sorting out this notorious pet peeve. We’ve even dropped in some suggestions for how you can store your necklaces so you avoid this irritating scenario as much as possible.
How To Untangle Necklaces. Getting Started.
Before you choose any of these methods to untangle your chain necklaces, you’re going to want to make sure you’re in a well-lit location so you can see the knots as clearly as possible. Desk lamps and mirrors with in-built, natural white lights are particularly useful. However, stay well away from bathroom sinks! It might be tempting to do your detangling in the bathroom because there’s particularly good lighting in there, but you don’t want to have any mishaps that result in you losing your favourite gold chain necklace down the plughole!
Secondly, unclasp the necklace and gently spread it out over a flat, light coloured background so you can get a good idea of what you’re dealing with. Be delicate and avoid pulling too hard or you run the risk of tightening the knots even more or worse still, snapping the chain.
Once that’s done, you’re good to go ahead and choose one of these 4 tried and tested methods. Happy Untangling!
How To Untangle Necklaces Using A Needle.
Equipment Needed: A sewing needle or something else thin and pointy
The Method: Place the pointed end of your sharp utensil directly into the centre of the knot you want to untangle. Then slowly wiggle the point backwards and forwards until the knot starts to give way. You can help the process by using two pins and working them in opposite directions or by gently using your fingers to unravel the chains as they come loose.
Top Tips: If you don’t have a needle, almost anything thin and pointy will do like a drawing pin, safety pin, toothpick or even the post of one of your stud earrings.
How To Untangle Necklaces Using Tweezers.
Equipment Needed: Tweezers
The Method: Follow pretty much exactly the same method as above for using a pin. You should find that tweezers are easier to control and manoeuvre than a pin giving you more control over the knot.
Top Tips: Be extra careful when using tweezers as over gripping might cause you to accidentally snap one of your chain links.
How To Untangle Necklaces Using Oil
Equipment Needed: Olive oil or baby oil, cotton bud, soap and water
The Method: If a needle just isn’t cutting it because the knots are especially tight, this could be the method for you. Apply a modest amount of either baby or olive oil to the knotted area of the chain necklace until it becomes slippery. Gently massage the knot until you begin to feel it loosen. Once everything is completely untangled, wash off the oil with mild soap and water and leave to dry naturally.
Top Tip: Using a cotton bud to apply your oil is recommended so you only use the exact amount you need. Too much oil can be difficult to work with not to mention a pain to wash out if you get it everywhere!
How To Untangle Necklaces Using Talcum Powder
Equipment Needed: Talcum powder / baby powder and warm water
The Method: Just like baby oil, baby powder will work just as well to lubricate your necklaces so it’s easier to work out knots. Pour a healthy sprinkle of the powder over your necklace and again gently wiggle out any knots with your fingers. Using a pin will speed up the process even more. Be sure to wash off the powder with mild soap and water once you’re finished.
Top Tip: Unlike baby oil, there is no need to be sparing with the amount of powder you use. Make sure you use enough to cover the whole necklace and keep adding more if you need it.
The Burning Question. Why Do Necklaces Tangle So Easily?
The answer to this question depends on where the necklace was when it became tangled. If it became tangled when you weren’t wearing it, then chances are that it hasn’t been stored correctly. Whilst trinket dishes are great for rings and stud earrings, they don’t bode well for necklaces that can intermingle with each other. The same goes for storing them in a regular box, drawer or pouch. Instead it’s best to keep you chain necklaces in properly designed storage boxes when you’re not wearing them. More on this later.
It’s very rare for a single necklace to become tangled if you’re wearing it but it is possible when wearing longer chains, especially if you’ve been doing a lot moving around, such as exercising. Multiple or layered necklaces, however, can be more prone to tangling…
Why Do Layered Necklaces Get Tangled?
Layered chain necklaces can become tackled if positioned too close together. The different chains can rub against each other as you go about your day. This can be avoided by choosing chains that are at least a few centimetres different in length, such as a choker necklace and pendant necklace, so the second chain dangles safely below the first minimising the risk of them twisting together. Our beaded gold choker necklace and an initial necklace from our range would make the perfect combo!
How To Store Necklaces To Prevent Tangling.
Get yourself a box, like our small double opening jewellery case, that has space for your necklaces to hang separately on claps or hooks. Whatever you do, avoid laying them flat, even in drawers, as the movement will cause them to tangle. Another easy DIY solution is to create a makeshift storage rack using a small cork board and multiple drawing pins, so your birthstone necklace never has to become tanged with your gold rope chain ever again!
How To Pack Necklaces To Prevent Tangling.
There are many handy storage solutions on the market which allow you to clip your necklace in place so they won’t move around when you’re on the move. Some of them even come as handy rollable wallets or pouches to help you save on space.

School's Almost Out – Your Piercing Guide
The long summer holidays are the perfect time for children and teens to get their ears pierced. With 6 whole weeks ahead, there’s plenty of time for an ear piercing to settle into the healing process meaning there’ll be no need to miss sports or PE when school starts again in September. In this holiday ear-piercing guide, you’ll find all the information you need for first time piercings, the aftercare process and other common questions parents have before embarking on this rite of passage.
What Is The Right Age to Pierce Your Child's Ears?
Ultimately, there are no legal restrictions regarding what age a child can get their ears pierced so it’s really down to what you are comfortable with as a family. This will be different for each individual parent and child.
Some parents choose to wait until their child is old enough to ask for their ears piercing themselves. Whilst other parents choose to get them done whilst they’re still young enough to not fiddle with the new piercing or try and take their earrings out.
It’s worth being aware that most professional piercers agree that toddlers are the most problematic age to pierce as they will often refuse to sit still whilst getting them done which can lead to complications. They’re also prone to knocking and snagging them during the healing process.
How Can You Make The Piercing Process Less Painful?
It’s an unavoidable truth that most younger children will cry when they get their ears pierced. But you can minimise any pain they feel by making sure you book in with a highly rated professional piercer.
There are also a number of over-the-counter numbing sprays and creams that you can buy to apply to the soon-to-be pierced area beforehand so they won’t feel a thing. Remember to have a soothing word with your child before their appointment to explain the process and relieve any of their anxieties.
What Should You Look for in an Ear-Piercing Professional?
Do your research. Ask friends where they took their children and make sure you check out plenty of reviews online. You’ll want to be sure that the professional you choose is certified as a piercing specialist and is able to explain both the procedure and their hygiene protocol with confidence. It also goes without saying that their studio or shop space should be clean and welcoming.
What are the Best Kids Earrings?
With any new piercing, it’s essential to choose jewellery that is the most compatible with our skin and body; the last thing you want is for your child to experience an allergic reaction or have their ear reject their new piercing.
You should choose metals which will not tarnish, oxidize or potentially react with their skin as the piercing heals. This means avoiding metals like silver or gold plated jewellery that may contain nickel.
Instead, opt for a hypoallergenic metal like stainless steel or titanium as these won’t cause problems for your little one’s delicate ears.
In terms of style, choosing smaller stud earrings to start with is a good idea. This will avoid them getting caught or snagged as even a little bit of tugging can cause issues during the healing process.

Where To Buy Childrens Earrings?
Solace has got you covered with our fabulous range of classic or quirky kids earrings. For first time piercings, many opt for something simple like timeless ball stud earrings. Love hearts are also hugely popular. Both our regular love heart and mini open heart studs are available as silver stud earrings or gold stud earrings.
Once the piercing has healed, your little one can switch up their look as much as they like as our stainless steel studs come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit their personality.
For nature lovers, we’ve got everything from bee, dragonfly or kids daisy studs. Or how about our pineapple studs earring to get them in the summer holiday mood? Whichever they go for, you can be rest assured that all our hypoallergenic studs are ideal for new ear piercings.
How Long Will It Take For Your Child’s Piercing To Heal?
Everyone’s body is different so there isn’t a one size fits all answer for how long it will take for your child’s piercings to fully heal. That said, most professionals agree that you shouldn’t remove or replace the initial earring for at least six weeks (which is why the summer holiday is the perfect time for a piercing!). After that, jewellery can be changed with care but it could take somewhere between four to six months for the piercing to be completely healed to the point that it won’t close up if jewellery is left out.
How Should You Care For a New Piercing?
Looking after a new ear piercing is straight forward so long as you clean them regularly but try and leave them well alone otherwise. Try to make the following 3 tips your mantra:
1. Always wash yours and your child’s hands with a mild, 100% natural soap before touching their newly pierced ears.
2. Using a saline solution, a mixture of salt and water, gently wash the piercing twice a day. Remember: the earring backs should always remain in place. Never take them out during cleaning.
3. Make sure you’ve thoroughly rinsed the piercings afterwards so there’s no soap residue left behind.
How Can You Avoid Ear Piercing Infections?
It’s important to check your child’s piercing for infection even if you think they’re old enough to look after it themselves. Make sure you avoid the pierced area coming into contact with any irritating chemicals such as those found in hair spray, perfumes and some deodorants.
Aside from cleaning, make sure your little one leaves the piercing well alone (no fiddling!) and pay extra attention not to knock it whilst getting dressed or brushing their hair.
It’s also a good idea to make sure the earring backs aren’t on too tight as this can also cause issues, if they are struggling with this, we have the perfect solution here: https://solacejewellery.co.uk/products/lox-secure-locking-earring-backs-2-pairs
If your child does experience any pain, swelling, bleeding or yellow discharge, it’s likely they have an infection and you should see a doctor as a precaution. Depending on the seriousness of the infection, they may prescribe some antibiotics or suggest you bathe the ear in a hot salt water solution to ease the pain.
What Should You Avoid Doing With a New Piercing?
Your child should avoid swimming for at least 24 hours after they’ve had their ears pierced. Some piercers suggest that you should wait up to two weeks to be on the safe side. It’s recommend that you’re extra careful in places that might contain unknown bacteria such as lakes and holiday swimming pools! Any sport which requires your child to wear a helmet is also best avoided for the first couple of days to avoid it getting knocked.
What Happens When They Go Back To School?
Choosing to get your child’s ears pierced in the school holidays is an excellent idea as they will be pretty much fully healed by the end of the six weeks. So as long as you’ve stuck within your schools piercing guidelines, you child should have no issue with their new piercing when they go back to school. It’s worth noting that some schools require all piercings to be covered with a plaster during P.E regardless of how long you’ve had them. And it’s best to choose discreet jewellery that won’t cause a fuss. Check out our full range of kids earrings here.

What Is Gold Plated Jewellery?
Gold plating is a technique where jewellery makers cover another base metal, such as copper or silver, with a thin layer of gold to achieve a look very similar to solid gold at a fraction of the price?
Great, right? Not exactly..
Because the standard of gold jewellery isn’t regulated, there are no specific requirements that manufacturers need to adhere to. Which means many brands will do the bare minimum by using cheap base metals with only the thinnest layer of low carat gold over the top. The thinner the layer, the shorter the lifespan of the piece.
Is Gold Plated Jewellery Cheap?
Gold plated jewellery can be more affordable than solid precious metals but there is a different price to pay. The cheaper the piece, the more likely it is that a low-quality base metal, such as nickel or copper, has been coated. It also means the layer of gold plating is likely to be very thin so it won’t be long before it wears away exposing the base metal underneath. Not only is this unsightly, but it can be problematic for those with sensitive skin.
Luckily, there is a cost effective alternative.
Stainless steel jewellery is a much more affordable yet durable alternative to solid gold and with modern PVD coating techniques, such as those used on our extensive range of gold stud earrings, you can still have that on-trend gold look.
Is Gold Plated Jewellery Durable?
Sadly, no.
Gold plated jewellery is not as durable as the thin layer of coating is susceptible to knocks and scratches. Plus, it might not be long before it distorts out of shape depending on what base metal has been used. In fact, in just a few short months, a gold-plated piece of jewellery can show signs of wear and tear or lose its original shine needing to be replaced.
Does Gold Plated Jewellery Tarnish?
Yes. One of the biggest disadvantages of gold plated jewellery is that it can become dull or even rusty over time. That’s because plated jewellery is more susceptible to tarnishing than say stainless steel or titanium jewellery. This tarnishing happens when either the gold alloy layer itself or the base metal underneath reacts with the oxygen in the air, causing it to turn an ugly black or even a green colour.
PVD coated stainless steel jewellery, however, is extremely tough and will not tarnish overtime so if you’re thinking of treating yourself to one of best-selling gold chains – like our gold box chain or beaded gold choker – you can be confident that it will stay looking it’s best for years to come.
Is Gold Plated Jewellery Water Resistant?
Again, no. Gold plated jewellery is not water-resistant. If you wear gold plated jewellery whilst showering or swimming, the water can damage and discolour the gold layer until it eventually wears off and exposes the metal underneath. This is further exacerbated by chlorinated water or salt water; even your sweat. So you should avoid wearing a gold plated necklace or other gold plated jewellery in things like steam rooms, saunas or when you go to the gym.
Stainless steel jewellery, however, is completely sweat and water resistant meaning you can wear it all day, every day without having to worry. In fact our gold rope chain necklace is the perfect complement to your gym look!
Does Gold Plated Jewellery Turn Your Skin Green?
Your skin turns green when the metal in jewellery reacts to oils in your skin. The main culprit is usually copper which is often used as the base metal for gold-plated jewellery. Once the layer of gold wears away, the skin comes into contact with the copper below and that dreaded green colour appears. Lower carat gold plating can even have copper lurking in the gold alloy itself which can cause the green discolouration as soon as you wear it. Luckily, you’ll never have to worry about one of our PVD coated gold rings turning your finger green as stainless steel does not react to skin in this way.
Is Gold Plated Jewellery Bad For The Environment?
Sadly, the effects of gold plated jewellery go far beyond our skin as it’s also bad for the environment. Not only are harmful chemicals, such as cyanide, typically used in the plating process but the disposable nature of the jewellery means it’s often not long before it ends up as landfill releasing harmful toxins. This is why people are choosing more sustainable options like stainless steel, which is 100% recyclable and lasts a lifetime, instead.
Is Gold Plated Jewellery Hypoallergenic?
No. Gold plated Jewellery is not hypoallergenic. As already discussed, if the jewellery has only been plated with a thin layer of gold, it won’t be long until that wears away and your skin comes into contact with the base metal underneath. In all gold plated jewellery, including gold plated earrings, this base metal can be made of anything including alloys containing nickel. This can cause bad allergic reactions for those with sensitive ears.
But even a thick layer of gold plating can still cause issues for those of us with sensitive skin. If the gold used in the plating itself is of low quality, it can contain problematic metal alloys that cause allergic reactions. So gold plated jewellery really isn’t your friend if you have sensitive skin. 316L grade stainless steel, on the other hand, is one of the most hypoallergenic metals on the market and is the same grade used for medical implants.
Is Gold PVD Coated Jewellery Better Than Gold Plated Jewellery?
Unlike gold plating which simply applies a thin layer of gold to another metal, Physical Vapor Deposition, or PVD, is a vacuum coating process with a brilliant finish. It uses titanium nitride to vaporise the solid gold material in a vacuum chamber before forming an extremely durable coating onto jewellery.
Stainless steel pieces go through this PVD coating process for a hypoallergic gold finish that’s 10x thicker than gold plating meaning it won’t fade or tarnish. PVD coatings are also water resistant and sweat resistant so your jewellery will stay looking fantastic however much you wear it.
Where Can You Buy Gold PVD Coated Jewellery?
The vast majority of Solace’s full range of hypoallergenic jewellery is available as silver or gold PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) options. Meaning you can choose which is right for your look.
So whether you’re after a showstopping gold pendant necklace and matching gold bracelet, or a pair of stylish gold huggie hoops, Solace has got you covered.

In this blog, we explore the history and significance of both gems as well as giving our top picks of the perfect birthstone jewellery whether it’s for yourself or as a gift for someone special. Let’s start with the pearl first.
Where Do Pearls Come From?
Pearls are unique as they’re the only gemstones produced by a living creature rather than mined from the earth. Molluscs such as oysters produce pearls when irritants like a parasite or sand get inside their shells and onto their soft tissue. To protect itself, the mollusc secretes a substance called nacre which hardens with a smooth coat to form a pearl. This process can occur naturally or be manufactured in pearl farms.
Are Pearls Ethical?
Sadly, there are multiple reasons why real pearls cannot be considered completely ethical. Overfishing means that natural pearls are incredibly rare so most are created through human intervention in pearl farms. This involves opening the shell of the living animal to insert an irritant inside, a process which less than half of the molluscs survive.
Are Pearls Vegan?
According to Peta, real pearls are not vegan as their formation requires a living thing to go through a stressful experience. And even naturally occurring pearls are collected by killing the mollusc.
What Are Faux Pearls?
Synthetic pearls are a fabulous alternative to expensive and problematic real pearls. They are often made from high quality beads which are expertly crafted to look almost identical to the real thing. Even the ancient Romans would make their own pearl replicas by coating beads with silver and glass as only the very wealthiest could afford the real thing. Later, the high-class workshops of Murano in Italy would become the center for dazzling yet affordable faux pearls.
You can follow on this trend with our timeless white pearl bead stud earrings or single pearl pendant which is available on it’s own or as a silver pendant necklace.
What Do Pearls Symbolise?
Whether real or faux, pearls hold strong symbolic meaning when given as a gift. They have long been regarded as an emblem of innocence, serenity and protection and are said to bestow the wearer with a positive mind and good luck. They’re also linked to the idea of longevity which is why they’re a popular gift between partners.
Where Can You Buy Ethical Peal Birthstone Jewellery?
As well as our classic pearl stud earrings and pearl pendant combo, our range also contains the stylish pearl huggie hoop earrings that are guaranteed to take any outfit from desk to drinks instantly. We’ve also got you covered if you’re in the market for something even more glam. Our showstopping pearl set huggies contain multiple beads to compliment your favourite special occasion outfit. Or if playful is more your thing, look no further than our matching pearl beaded gold anklet and pearl beaded gold choker.
What is the Alternative June Birthstone?
Whilst pearls are undeniably a timeless beauty, they don’t suit everyone’s taste. Particularly if you have more of a quirky or alternative style. But luckily there’s another option. June babies can also opt for the showstopping Alexandrite as their alternative birthstone since it was added to the official birthstone list in 1952.
What Colour is Alexandrite?
Part of Alexandrite’s allure is it’s captivating ability to change colour in different lights thanks to the fact that it contains the mineral chrysoberyl. In natural daylight, the stone will reflect greeny-blue and yellow hues. But under artificial or candle light it will change to become a deep colour of raspberry. Which is why Alexandrite is popularly described as being an “emerald by day, ruby by night.”
What is the History of Alexandrite and Where is Alexandrite Found?
Alexandrite stones were first discovered in 1830 in the emerald mines of Russia’s Ural Mountains. It takes its name from Tsar Alexander II who is said to have turned 18 on the day that the first deposits were found.
The original Ural Mountain deposits were eventually depleted so that true, fine-quality Alexandrite stones are now exceptionally rare to come by. In fact, you’re much more likely to find it in expensive antique jewellery than you are in a modern piece. That said, some stones can still be found in Brazil, Sri Lanka and East Africa but they are not of the same quality and come with a very hefty price tag.
Luckily, you can find affordable alternatives which look just as gorgeous as the real thing. Our blue Alexandrite birthstone necklace is made from a stunning light blue crystal and has just as much wow factor as the natural version. Opt for the silver chain necklace style if you want to ooze modern glam or there’s also the gold chain option if you want a more retro yet on-trend look.
What Does Alexandrite Symbolise?
Being a relatively new gemstone, there isn’t quite as many legends attached to Alexandrite as other stones. But it has still developed many positive connotations due to its seemingly magical colour properties. It’s said that wearing the stone can help expand the imagination and inspire creativity as well as helping the wearer adapt more easily to change.
Where can you buy Alexandrite birthstone jewellery?
Sadly, natural Alexandrite is incredibly rare but luckily we have some stunning yet affordable crystal alternatives for you to choose from. Alongside our Alexandrite birthstone necklace, we also have matching blue Alexandrite gold stud earrings and silver stud earrings. Both of which are available as part of our money saving birthstone giftset. Simply choose the month and your preferred colour of metal and you’ll receive both your birthstone pendant necklace and birthstone earrings in a handy gift package ready to give to the lucky recipient.

There’s no right or wrong time for little ones to get their ears pierced. It all comes down to when feels right for you as a family.
There are, however, some definite dos and don’ts for buying childrens earrings when the time comes. What material should you go for? What shape and size should you buy?
We’ll answer these questions and more to help you enjoy this special, milestone moment together.
What are the Best Earrings for Kids?
When buying kids earrings, you should avoid cheap costume jewellery which may contain irritants that your child’s young skin might be sensitive to. Instead, opt for an hypoallergenic option that will be kind to your little one’s delicate ears.
To be classed as hypoallergenic, jewellery needs to be very unlikely to cause a reaction. Which is where stainless steel comes in.
Not only is stainless steel perfect for sensitive ears, it also has the added benefits of being cost effective and hassle-free, as you don't have to take it out for showering or swimming. Not to mention being absolutely stunning and available in multiple colours.
Why spend big money on silver earrings or gold earrings only to watch them tarnish over time?
Not when you can opt for high quality, and just as gorgeous, stainless steel alternatives that will keep their shine as your little one grows. Meaning that even when they do eventually grow out of them, you’ll be able to keep them as a pristine keepsake.
Worried they’ll got lost? Stainless steel has your back with that one too. Stainless steel earrings are completely waterproof meaning you don’t need to worry about constantly taking them out and misplacing them in the hubbub of everyday life.
Can Kids Wear Drop Earrings?
It’s best to avoid dangly earrings when they are young for two reasons. The first is that the weight of drop earrings can weigh down your little one’s lobes which increases the risk of irritation and discomfort. The second is that they aren’t practical for young children (who let’s face it, spend most of their time climbing, clambering and causing general chaos!).
A dangly earring runs the risk of getting caught on something and falling out, or worse still, tearing your child’s little lobe. Instead, opt for stainless steel stud earrings which are flat and unobtrusive as well as widely accepted by schools.
As your child gets older and this becomes less of a risk, we do have some kids drop earrings in stock that are pretty, but lightweight to avoid any pull on the lobes.
What Size Should You Buy for Kids Earrings?
Much in the same way that you should avoid heavy drop earrings for children, you should also make sure you choose a size that won’t overwhelm their smaller face and features.
For a smaller, more discreet style, our mini 4mm – 5mm stud earrings are best. Available in cute and classic designs such as stars, flowers and hearts, these dinky studs are perfect for every day wear in dainty ears or as an option for school.
Then there’s also our 7mm-8mm kids range which are ideal for tweens who want to show off their bling that little bit more.
How to Keep Kids Earrings from Falling Out?
As previously mentioned, you drastically reduce your chances of losing your child’s earrings by choosing stainless steel studs that don’t need to be constantly taken out at bath or bedtime.
But sadly that doesn’t mean they’re completely immune to fiddly fingers or energetic explorers. That might take a little bit of extra backup in the form of Lox Secure Locking Backs.
Simply slide these easy-to-use, hypoallergenic backs into place and they won’t be released until you squeeze the metal clip on the back. There’s no need to worry about size either as they fit any size of stud earring post.
Where to Buy Childrens Earrings?
Here at Solace, we know that kids stud earrings don’t need to be boring. We’ve got so many different fun and colourful stainless steel studs in our range that your little ones will love.
Geometric designs are always popular such as our mini crescent moon, star or triangle shaped allergy free earrings. One of the most desirable choices is of course the timeless love heart. Both our regular love heart and mini open heart shaped studs are available as silver stud earrings or gold stud earrings.
But nothing beats our fun and funky range of quirky shaped earrings. For animal lovers, we’ve got everything from panda, hedgehog or flamingo studs. Or colourful crown studs for little princesses. Then there’s our pineapple or watermelon studs which are perfect for summer. And even UFO studs and unicorn horn studs for tweens who like to do things their own way.
Whichever you go for, you can be safe in the knowledge that all our stainless steel studs are ideal for new and little ear piercings.

Remember when fidget spinners were a thing back in 2017?
They became so popular as a toy that people all but forgot about their intended purpose; to help people concentrate, settle their nerves or relieve anxiety. Their popularity was short lived, partly due to their conspicuous size and the frequent misrepresentation of them being only for children. But just because fidget spinners fell out of vogue doesn’t mean the benefits of keeping our hands busy went away.
Enter the fidget ring. A stylish solution that discreetly helps the wearer stay calm and avoid bad habits like biting their nails or twirling their hair. Read our guide to find out more about how fidget rings work, what they can help with and if one could be right for you.
What Are Fidget Rings?
A fidget ring, or an anxiety ring as they’re also known, can come in many different shapes and sizes. But they all have one thing in common; the fact that they’re designed to be worn on your finger with the purpose of focusing your mind and reducing stress.
They can be made out of pretty much any material, such as titanium or stainless steel, and will have a moveable element as part of their design. This could again be anything from gemstones to beads or even a spinning ring.
Ours, for example, features moveable metal beads. The beauty of fidget rings is that you can choose one that suits your taste and style, the best being the ones that compliment your wardrobe whilst providing a beneficial function.
How Do Fidget Rings Work?
As all fidget rings are different, how they work can differ. But in most cases there will be a something to roll, flick or spin with your fingers.
By keeping your hands busy in this way, you’re giving your mind something different to think about other than the anxiety or nerves that you might be feeling. The calming distraction of the continuous, rhythmic movement is known to help wearers cope in stressful situations.
It can also help those who are prone to nail biting or skin picking as it shifts the focus away from the habit and onto the ring.
Do Fidget Rings Help With Anxiety?
To really answer this question, we must first look at how stress works as a physical thing that our bodies experience.
When you’re feeling stressed, nervous or anxious, your body goes into a hypersensitive mode and releases stress chemicals. This leads to overactivity as your body struggles to cope with the additional hormones. This is more commonly known as the “fight or flight” response.
This overactivity can present itself in different ways – some common examples include biting your nails, wobbling your knee or clicking your pen. In more extreme cases, it can present itself as a panic attack. This is where an anxiety fidget ring can help.
By giving your brain something else to think about other than the symptoms of anxiety, you’re helping to take your mind off the stressful situation. As such, there are many user testimonials supporting the fact that anxiety fidget rings have helped bring calm and alleviated symptoms during episodes of anxiety.
It should be noted that fidget rings do not, however, treat the root causes of stress and anxiety. We would always suggest that you seek professional medical advice for this. But fidget rings can be a great addition to your daily coping strategies.
Do Fidget Rings Help With Picking?
Just as fidget rings help people release nervous energy, they can also help focus the mind away from repetitive habits such as picking at your skin and nail cuticles or pulling at your hair. The theory works much in the same way as it does with stress; if your mind is busy thinking about playing with the ring, it can’t think about the habit you’re trying to break.
As most habits are subconscious, it can be a little tricky at first. But you can train your brain by switching to playing with the fidget ring every time you catch yourself picking at something you shouldn’t be. Eventually, your go-to-response will be to fidget with the ring in the first place instead.
Do Fidget Rings Improve Concentration?
Anyone who likes to doodle when they’re in a meeting will know that movement can help the brain focus more on what’s been said. A fidget ring works much in the same way as it requires just the right amount of attention to stop the mind from wandering off completely but not too much that it becomes a distraction from what’s going on itself. It’s a sort of mental break through a repetitive movement that can keep you grounded and on task. This makes them great for both adults who work in offices and children listening in the classroom at school.
Where Can I Buy Fidget Rings UK?
Thanks to TikTok and Instagram, fidget rings have seen a huge spike in popularity and are becoming more readily available. But as with all jewellery, they can vary greatly in quality depending on where you buy them from. We’d recommend avoiding anything made from materials that contain high levels of nickel as this can cause irritation, or copper that will turn your finger green – especially as you’ll most likely want to wear you fidget ring every day.
Avoid that problem with our 316L Stainless Steel fidget ring that’s both stylish and practical. Available as both a silver fidget ring and gold fidget ring, this piece features moveable metal beads that you can play with using your fingers to keep focused or calm as and when you need it.
The fact our ring is waterproof, lightweight and tarnish free means you’ll never have to take it off so it will always be there when you need it the most. It also comes in multiple sizes and looks great either on its own or combined with your other gold rings or silver rings to create an on-trend stacking look.

What Are Hypoallergenic Earrings?
Those of us with sensitive skin know all about the challenges of buying jewellery, especially earrings. If we’re not careful, the wrong earrings will leave our ears feeling itchy, inflamed, sore or worse. But what’s causing this irritation? It all comes down to the type of metal in the jewellery.
Jewellery is made from many different types of metal including gold, silver and stainless steel. But not all of them are good for sensitive skin. Hypoallergenic earrings, however, have been crafted so that they’re trouble free for sensitive ears. But what exactly are they and how can you shop them?
What Are Hypoallergenic Earrings?
In a nut shell, hypoallergenic earrings are made from materials which are the least likely to cause an allergic reaction when they come into contact with the skin. If you suffer from sensitive skin or a metal allergy there will be a specific metal that you’re sensitive to. Whilst everyone is different, nickel is the most common metal that causes people problems. In fact, up to 15% of us have a nickel allergy. Copper is another common culprit that should be avoided if you have sensitive ears.
So what about hypoallergenic jewellery? To qualify as hypoallergenic, earrings should be nickel free or contain only tiny, trace elements of nickel that won’t react to the skin.
It’s good to have an understanding of exactly which metal is causing your irritation. That way you can ensure those hypoallergenic earrings you’ve got your eye on don’t contain any materials you’re allergic to.
What is the Most Hypoallergenic Metal for Earrings?
Most jewellery is crafted from what is known as a metal alloy. An alloy is a mixture of at least two different types of metal that have been combined together. One reason for doing this is to make the earrings more durable. Pure gold and silver, for example, are too soft to wear for any length of time so jewellers will add different metals to give them more strength.
The best hypoallergenic metals for sensitive ears are those that do not contain troublesome alloys such as nickel or copper. The four best metals for this are platinum, niobium, stainless steel and titanium. Here’s the lowdown on each.
Stainless Steel
Earrings made from 316L grade stainless steel are great for those with sensitive skin as it contains only a trace amount of nickel that’s way under the amount deemed safe to wear by the European Union's Nickel Directive (more on this later). But it’s true that not all brands of stainless steel jewellery have this high standard.
Luckily, all our hypoallergenic jewellery is made from 316L grade stainless steel which is one of the most hypoallergenic metals on the market and the same grade used for medical implants.
SHOP OUR STAINLESS STEEL JEWELLERY
Titanium
Titanium is one of the best metals for those with sensitive skin as less than 0.6% of people are allergic to it!
Implant grade titanium earrings are what we call biocompatible – meaning the body won’t reject it – which makes it perfect for piercings. And because it’s a non-reactive metal, titanium won’t lose its sparkle by tarnishing over time either.
Our collection of titanium earrings features high quality titanium cartilage studs, glam half hoops studs and classic titanium studs in a cute range of shapes.
Are Stainless Steel Earrings Hypoallergenic?
As mentioned above, 316L grade stainless steel is considered to be hypoallergenic and safe to wear by those with sensitive skin according to the European Union's Nickel Directive.
The European Union's Nickel Directive, which sets a limit on the amount of nickel that can be released from jewellery, states that jewellery should release no more than 0.5 micrograms of nickel per square centimetre, per week. 316L grade stainless steel releases a whopping 10 times less than this at only 0.02 micrograms of nickel per square centimetre, per week.
All our stainless steel earrings are made from 316L grade stainless steel which is why 95% of our customers are able to wear them without irritation. We’ll even offer you a free refund in the very unlikely event that they don’t work for you.
Are Sterling Silver Earrings Hypoallergenic?
The short answer is no. The longer answer is slightly more complicated.
Because 100% pure silver is too soft to use in jewellery without getting scratched or bending out of shape, jewellers will add different metals to form an alloy that’s more durable. Which means sterling silver earrings are actually made up of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of another metal. It’s this additional 7.5% that makes sterling silver allergies common.
Because nickel looks very similar to pure silver, is can sometimes be the alloy of choice to create sterling silver jewellery. Copper is also very common. Which is why people often experience itchy, tender or swollen skin when they wear it; it’s the alloy they’re reacting to, not the silver itself. Worse still, once you’ve experienced a reaction, your immune systems becomes more sensitive to nickel. So it could get worse each time you wear a piece that contains it.
If you have a metal allergy, it may be possible to find sterling silver earrings which have been created using an alloy which doesn’t cause you problems. But more often than not, the metal alloy used is hard to determine. So it’s best to avoid if you have very sensitive ears.
Are 18k Gold Earrings Hypoallergenic?
Shopping for gold earrings can be very problematic as the term “gold jewellery” is used widely to refer to many different things. For example, the purity of gold is measured in Karats; the maximum being 24 which is considered pure gold. Anything below 24k means that the gold has been mixed with another metal to form an alloy. Like pure silver, pure gold is too soft to be used in jewellery so 18k is considered to be the highest usable purity.
18K gold jewellery is made up of 75% gold and 25% of something else (possibly nickel or copper). In theory, this should be a high enough combination for most people to avoid an allergic reaction but those with very sensitive ears should still be careful or avoid altogether as irritation is still possible. There’s also the added problem of price. Because of it’s purity, 18k is expensive. Which is why most affordable jewellery is 14K. But remember, the lower the purity, the higher chance of a reaction.
Are Gold Plated Brass Earrings Hypoallergenic?
No! Gold plated earrings are popular because they are cheaper than solid gold. But these are definitely NOT suitable for sensitive ears. That’s because gold plating metals like brass simply means that a thin layer of gold has been applied over the top. This can cause irritation straight away or over time as the thin gold plating wears away, exposing your skin to the copper or nickel containing brass underneath.
Luckily, there is still a way that those with sensitive skin can wear gold jewellery without breaking the bank. Most of our hypoallergenic jewellery is available as gold PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coated pieces suitable for sensitive skin. So whether you’re after a knockout gold chain and matching gold bracelet, or a pair of stylish gold huggie hoops, Solace has got you covered.
Where Can You Buy Hypoallergenic Earrings?
You’ll find jewellery self-labelled as “hypoallergenic” all over the internet but it’s hard to know what you’re getting from some suppliers. Some, for example, may say that their earrings are hypoallergenic because they’ve had a coating applied to them. But the metal underneath could still contain nickel which may become exposed over time causing irritation.
From our stud earrings to our ear cuffs, anklets to our pendants, we only use the highest quality 316l stainless steel or titanium to create our on-trend jewellery. And we’re constantly checking our competition to make sure we’re keeping our promise to provide you with the largest range of allergy-safe jewellery in the UK.
We’re so convinced that you’ll be 100% happy with our products that we even offer free returns in the very unlikely event our jewellery doesn’t work for you. Shop now to join the 95% of our customers who re-found their love of earrings thanks to Solace.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that anyone celebrating an April birthday had seriously lucked out by having the diamond as their official birthstone. After all, what's better than arguably the most prized gemstone of them all?
But let’s face it. Diamonds are seriously expensive. Not to mention the fact that they also carry a serious environmental and ethical cost. Which can all add up to April babies feeling priced out and uneasy when it comes to birthstone jewellery.
But there’s no reason why the Aries amongst you should miss out. Not when there’s an affordable and sustainable alternative to diamonds that shines just as bright in April birthstone jewellery: cubic zirconia.
Cubic Zirconia, or CZ as it’s known, has historically been a somewhat misunderstood stone so we’re here to set the record straight with everything you need to know about this dazzling beauty.
What’s the difference between Cubic Zirconia and Diamonds?
In a nut shell, the difference between diamond and cubic zirconia jewellery is the fact that diamonds are naturally occurring whilst CZ is man-made. Importantly though, there is very little visible difference between the two.
Just like diamonds, CZ are gorgeously clear stones that emit a radiant shine when light hits them. CZ also offer the same long-lasting durability as diamonds which is why the stone features in our stainless steel birthstone jewellery that’s been designed to stand the test of time.
April babies have a choice of chain colour's as our gorgeous CZ pendant necklace is available as both a gold chain necklace and a silver chain necklace. We also have matching CZ gold stud earrings or silver stud earrings so you can complete the set.
Why Should You Choose Cubic Zirconia Instead of Diamonds?
So why else should those of you looking to treat yourself to a special piece of birthstone jewellery - or those wanting to do the same for a friend - choose CZ instead of diamonds? Another reason is their price, both literally and metaphorically. A brief history of the stones will tell you more.
Natural diamonds are formed when deposits of carbon way down in the earth (90 to 125 miles down in fact!) are subject to extreme heat and high pressure. This process can take millions – sometimes billions - of years and the stones then need to be extracted using potentially harmful mining processes.
Cubic zirconia, on the other hand, is a diamond simulant made through a similar process but in a lab using a material called zirconium dioxide. This actually results in a more flawless stone as cubic zirconia is not susceptible to the blemishes and flaws that occur in natural diamonds. Just one reason to consider CZ as an alternative for your Aries Birthstone Jewellery.
Are Diamonds Worth The Money?
There’s no getting around the fact that diamonds are extremely costly. And depending on where you shop, the high cost won’t always equate to better quality stones. Some shady diamond sellers will more than happily take your money in exchange for an inferior product. So you can easily find yourself paying way over the odds if you don’t do your research.
But even the finest diamonds might not exactly be worth what you think they are. It wasn’t until huge deposits of diamonds were found in South Africa in 1938 that companies embarked on a strategy to market diamonds as incredibly valuable and rare in order to sell them for higher prices. In fact, it wasn’t until the “diamonds are forever” advertising campaign in 1947 by the diamond company, De Beers, that diamond engagement rings suddenly boomed in popularity with overinflated price tags to match.
How Expensive is Cubic Zirconia?
Cubic Zirconia is more readily available than diamonds meaning you get all the brilliance, clarity and durability without breaking the bank. And you don’t need to compromise on quality either. Just like Diamonds, CZ stones are valued according to the Four Cs (cut, clarity, colour and carat). meaning you can pay slightly more for more skilfully created pieces.
This abundance and affordability of CZ makes it more versatile for everyday wear. Which is why you can choose to buy your birthstone jewellery in a variety of quirky shapes like our CZ Daisy Stud Earrings or CZ Star Climber Earrings. There’s no need to stick to simple cuts like there is with other gems!
Why Can Diamonds Be Unethical?
As well as being expensive, diamonds also have an ethical and environmental cost. Violence, exploitation and unsafe working conditions are all common and serious problems in diamond mines. In fact, up to a staggering 25% of diamonds sold today are a product of human rights abuses or conflict.
Irresponsible mining, such as water pollution and deforestation, has also led to irreversible damage to the environment. On top of this, huge amounts of harmful carbon is emitted into the air during the diamond mining process causing further damage to the natural world – something you don’t need to worry about when you choose lab created CZ birthstone jewellery.
How Do You Care For CZ Jewellery?
The strength and durability of CZ stones means it’s possible to use methods such as ultrasonic cleansing to keep your jewellery looking it’s best. But good old fashioned soap and water works just as well too.
All you need to do is soak your cz jewellery in warm water with added detergent before removing the dirt gently with a soft toothbrush.
Choosing your Cubic Zirconia Birthstone Jewellery
So there you have it. If you’re wanting an unproblematic April birthstone necklace or a set of April birthstone earrings that has the some look, brilliance and sparkle of diamonds, CZ is the gem for you. The only difficulty now is choosing which piece to go for as there really is something for everyone.
For some timeless glamour, look no further than a pair of our circular cubic zirconia stud earrings which are available in six different sizes to suit both adults and little ones. They’re also great as part of a multi-piercing curated ear.
We also have some gorgeous CZ paved rings which would make the perfect birthstone gift for that special someone in your life. Or for a similarly romantic gesture, there’s our classic CZ heart-shaped studs which are again available in multiple sizes to suit the wearer.
If you’re looking for a piece of April birthstone jewellery for a friend, then our Sparkle CZ Hypoallergenic Bracelet makes a cute alternative to a classic friendship bracelet. Like most of our jewellery, it’s available in two colour options as, unlike some gemstones, CZ stones equally suit being set within gold jewellery as they do within silver. Choose the silver bracelet if you’re wanting something elegant and chic or opt for the gold bracelet if being on-trend is more their vibe. Whatever you’re looking for, you’re sure to find apiece of CZ birthstone jewellery to suit their style.

Your Guide to The Different Styles of Necklaces and How to Wear Them
We all know that necklaces have the ability to elevate even the simplest of outfits. But when it comes down to it, do we really know the difference between a cable chain and a curb chain? Or what style of neckline looks best with a choker chain? Yet it’s these subtle details that can change the whole vibe of your look.
But fear not! This ultimate guide to the different styles of necklaces is packed full of tips and tricks that will have you styling your pieces like a pro in no time.
What is a Choker Necklace and how do you style them?
Choker necklaces are definitely having a moment right now thanks to the 90’s resurgence that shows no sign of stopping anytime soon.
Typically worn tight to the neck, chokers are designed to draw attention to your neckline. Because of this, they work particularly well with tops and dresses that expose some of the top of your chest. Think strappy vests, cute v-necks, retro corset tops and off-the-shoulder numbers.
Slimmer choker chains (like our Beaded Hypoallergenic Choker Necklace) give you more room to play with, so can be easily paired with higher necklines like boat or crew neck t-shirts. Just make sure the choker sits nicely above your collar bone.
In terms of style, there’s a huge amount to choose from. From simple gold chain chokers to beach-inspired bead chokers, there’s something for everyone’s look. But you can’t beat the timeless glam of pearls for an instant showstopper. Our pearl choker necklace is the perfect modern twist on the classic pearl necklace. Team yours with a floaty spaghetti strap dress for instant summer vibes.
But what about the full look? Choker necklaces naturally draw the eye to be a real focal point of an outfit. So you’ll want to keep any additional jewellery relatively low-key. Matching metals always work best. So think gold stud earrings to compliment a gold choker necklace. Or silver short drop earrings to match a silver choker necklace. If you stick to that golden rule, you can’t go wrong!
Solace’s Top Tip for wearing Choker necklaces: Don’t take the name too literally! Your choker is too tight if it’s making you uncomfortable.
What is a Chain Necklace and How do You Style Them?
A chain necklace should be the staple of any self-respecting jewellery box. But with so many different styles, thicknesses and lengths, where do you start? Let us break it down for you.
Cable Chain Necklaces
Probably the most popular of all chain necklaces, cable chains consist of a series of interlocking round or oval links. They’re often designed to sit in the middle of the chest but come in pretty much all lengths to suit the look you’re going for. With the ability to dress cable chain necklaces up and down, they’re the perfect choice for everyday wear. Use them to elevate your favourite athleisure outfit or dress them up with a bardot top for some going out bling.
Curb Chain Necklaces
A curb chain is quite similar to the cable chain in that they’re created using interlocking oval links. The difference is that they’re designed to sit flat against your skin for ultimate comfort. Perfect if you’re looking for something unfussy that won’t get snagged on your outfit.
Box Chain Necklaces
A box chain is the cable chain’s edgy relative. Formed of interconnected square links, the end result is a sleek and modern design that’s highly durable. They’re available in both mini and extra-long options, making the styling options endless. We’d recommend using box chains as part of a layered look to add texture and depth. Ours are available to shop now in gold chain and silver chain variations.
Link Chain Necklaces
Look no further than the link chain if you want to bring your jewellery collection bang up to date. Link chains are made up of round or oval interconnecting links that alternative in direction for a chunky finish. Worn best at a length that sits just on the collar bone or higher, link chains can be worn to add a bit of rock n’ roll edge to a party outfit or some interest to a regular crew neck shirt. Elongated oval link chains, known as paperclip chains, are particularly popular right now, working well as a silver necklace that’s rebelliously cool.
Rolo Chain Necklaces
Rolo chains share some similarities with the link chain as they also consist of symmetrical circular links. The difference being that, whilst they are rounded outside, they’re flattened on the inside for a distinctive finish. These are incredibly solid chains that work well as a statement piece on their own or as a centre piece to a carefully curated layered look.
Rope Chain Necklaces
Rope chains get their name from the twisting pattern of metal that’s woven together to create their unique shape. The resulting design is one of high-end luxury especially if chosen in a slightly thicker, gold metal. In fact, the gold rope chain would put up a good fight in the battle to be named the most popular style of gold necklace for women on the market right now. And with the ease at which they can transform any look from plain to party, it’s not hard to see why!
Snake Chain Necklaces
The tightly joined curved plates of the snake chain give this necklace a sleek and smooth finish that oozes chicness. Their semi-solid design looks practically seamless when viewed from a distance although close up you can spot the tiny grooves resembling scales that gives the snake chain it’s name. Snake chains are versatile enough for most occasions but particularly suit a dressy look. it’s best to keep them as a short or mid-length necklace because of their weight.
Figaro Chain Necklaces
Classic yet contemporary. Timeless yet bold. The figaro chain necklace has it all. Their design is made up of a sequence of several (usually 3) small oval links followed by a larger link. This is another style that’s typically worn as a gold chain that sits on the collar bone. They’re striking enough to be worn alone but can also be accompanied by a simple gold pendant or charm.
What Is A Pendant Necklace and How Do You Style Them?
A pendant necklace is any necklace that has a separate decorative piece of jewellery hanging freely from the chain or cord. Generally, this piece is attached to the necklace itself by a small loop that gives the pendant some movement. Popular pendant styles include a simple bar, hearts, initials or birthstones which we’ll talk about in more detail later.
Pendant necklaces are an easy win addition to any wardrobe. But with so many ways to wear them, it can be daunting to know where to start. Here’s our top tips to get the most out of your pendant necklace.
When wearing a pendant necklace with a T-Shirt or Jumper, it looks best when the length sits just below the neckline. The same goes for elevating turtlenecks with a pendant that hangs loose below the collar. Warm gold pendant necklaces look especially good sat on the bare skin exposed when wearing a v-neck or similar. You’ll want to make sure the decorative piece sits roughly in the middle between the bottom of your neck and start of the shirt. The lower cut the top, the longer you can go with the chain!
Solace’s Top Tip Style Tip: Create a sleek, minimal pearl necklace by pairing a slim silver chain with a larger pearl pendant. Pearl pendant necklaces become a statement piece with ultimate impact when paired with a dark, monochrome outfit.
Type of Pendant: Initial and Letter Necklaces
Mixing timeless style with uncopiable individuality, initial necklaces never go out of vogue. An initial necklace symbolises something of emotional importance to the wearer. It could be the name of a partner, child, family member, pet or even a special place. The beauty is their subtle ability to pack so much meaning into a simple design.
In terms of styles, larger stand-alone letters look good on longer chains on their own or paired with a shorter choker. Whereas the engraved pendant of our gold initial necklace would suit being framed by two other gold chains of varied textures.
Types of Pendant: Birthstone Necklaces
Like initial necklaces, birthstone necklaces are personal and significant to the wearer. Each month of the year is represented by a different beautiful gemstone. For example, the June birthstone is pearl and the October birthstone is Opal. People often gift birthstone necklaces as birthday gifts or people might choose to wear them as pendants because of the special properties they’re said to possess. For many, they are a symbol of luck and protection. Style yours in a similar way to the initial necklaces above.
How Do You Style Layered Necklaces?
Now you’re an expert on all the different types of necklaces out there you’re going to want to get in on the trend that all the A-list celebs and fashion bloggers are sporting right now; layered necklaces.
There’s no set rules to the layered necklace trend but for layering newbies, we’d suggest starting with three chains to perfect your spacing. Another key tip is to vary the styles, weights and textures of your necklaces to create a perfectly curated neckline.
To glimmer in gold, start with a gold choker necklace or short gold snake chain necklace. Next, add a second piece that’s a few centimetres longer. Something like a gold rope chain or gold link chain would work well. Finally, add a slightly longer gold cable chain necklace to complete the look.
Pendants can also work well with a layered look. Especially as the final point on the longest chain in the set or framed in the middle by two chains of equal length apart.
Solace’s Top Tips For Layering Necklaces: Layered necklaces look best against bare necklines or plain white tops. Anything else can risk looking too fussy.
So that’s it! Your complete guide to all the different types of necklaces and how to wear them. Ready to shop a new style? You’ll find everything you’re looking for in our full range of silver and gold stainless steel necklaces.

Can I pierce my own ears? Here's everything you need to know...
If you’ve ever seen the 90’s remake of The Parent Trap, you’ll remember the famous scene where Annie has her ears pierced using just an ice cube, a needle and an apple. Cue Lindsay Lohan's ahem, ear piercing scream and tweens up and down the country replicating the method at sleepovers (much to their parents' dismay!).
But whilst it’s pretty obvious that rubbing fruit over a soon-to-be wound is less than sanitary, is there actually a way to safely pierce your own ears?
It’s a question that a lot of us were asking over lockdown, with google searches relating to “how to pierce ears at home" increasing by 500% percent and remaining high now restrictions have lifted. So, to make sure you’re fully informed, here’s everything you need to know before DIYing those lobes.
What Are the Dangers Involved with Piercing Your Own Ears?
First things first, it’s important to remember that there will always be a risk of infection when you’re getting a new piercing. But this risk is significantly reduced if you go to a professional or use the correct, sterilized equipment and hypoallergenic jewellery. You’ll also need to make sure you follow a stringent aftercare routine.
Without the proper equipment and sanitary conditions, you’re more likely to shatter your cartilage (which can lead to permanent lumps) and increase the risk of your body rejecting the jewellery which can cause severe pain and discomfort.
So, in short, put down the sewing needle and step away. If you are going to pierce your own ears, you’re going to need a much more professional approach than that.
What Are Home Piercing Kits?
If you’ve decided that piercing your ears is the right call for you, then you should invest in a professional home piercing kit like the one from Inverness. In the kit, you will receive:
1 pair of sterilized piercing earrings with exclusive Inverness Safety Backs.™
Easy-to-follow instructions.
1 hand-pressured piercing instrument.
1 pair of single-use gloves.
2 hygienic cleansing towelettes.
1 surgical marking pen.
60ml of aftercare solution
With this kit, you’ll have everything you need to pierce your ears at home following an easy to follow, 3 Step Process.
When Should You Not Use a Home Piercing Kit?
The Inverness Home Piercing Kit is designed for use on the ear lobes only. You should not try and pierce anywhere else on your body using the kit. In fact, we would always suggest going to a professional for any kind of cartilage or body piercing as it's much harder to get the positioning right (nobody wants a wonky nose stud) and the risk of rejection is higher.
And whilst the kit is easy to use, it’s important that you’re confident enough to follow the instructions correctly and should not be used if you are under 18.
We would recommend seeing a professional to have your ears pierced, but we know this is not always accessible for all. So, for those of you who have weighed up the options and decided to take the plunge, make sure to buy a professional kit like the one we have suggested, and we hope you love your new DIY lobes!

How Should You Wash Your Hair with a New Cartilage Piercing?
Cartilage piercings are the definition of cool. But they don’t come without their considerations.
It’s important to note that cartilage piercings take longer to heal than fleshy piercings. Which makes your aftercare routine extra important. Keeping your cartilage clean is essential to avoid infection but over washing and the risk of bumps and knocks can cause irritation.
So how do you navigate this tricky balance when you’re taking a shower and washing your hair? Find out with this handy “how to” guide.
Can I shower in my cartilage piercing?
It seems strange that showering can cause a potential risk to your new cartilage piercing. Especially when good hygiene is an important part of the healing process. But those of us with long hair risk snagging it on your cartilage earring and causing damage to the skin. This can extend the heal time and worse still, lead to irritation or infection.
There’s also an added risk from the products we use when we shower. The chemicals found in some shampoos and conditioners can dry out your new piercing or cause it to become inflamed. This is especially true for those with sensitive skin.
Can I use shampoo and conditioner after getting a new cartilage piercing?
You should avoid using products that contain chemicals like parabens. Instead opt for shampoos and conditioners that are made from natural and organic ingredients or specially formulated for those with sensitive skin. We stock a range of beauty products that are perfect for this.
And when you use them, you should use a washing method that avoids your new piercing. Here are two of the most effective:
The Side Flip
Flip your hair to the opposite side of your head so you can avoid getting an excessive amount of water or any product in the wound. Make sure you stay in this position until you’ve completely rinsed the product out of your hair before gently patting your ear dry.
The Upside-Down Wash
This is the best option if you are trying to avoid piercings in both ears or a piercing at the top of your ear (like a helix of scaffold piercing). Let your hair hang over the front of your head and wash face down until the product is completely rinsed away. Then rinse your piercing with warm water and gently pat dry
What Do You Do If You Get Hair Product in Your New Piercing?
First of all, don’t panic. If you do get product in your piercing, it’s not the end of the world.
Your best bet is to simply hold your ear under a slow stream of warm water (be careful not to have the pressure too high or this could damage the healing skin).
And don’t give in to the temptation of touching it or this could make it worse – just let the water do the work and then (you’ve guessed it) gently pat dry afterwards.
As well as taking care with products and snags, your best bet to avoid infection or irritation is to wear hypoallergenic cartilage jewellery like our range of stainless steel studs, hoops and rings.

The first question you’re likely to ask when a new piercing becomes unusually painful or swollen is “is my piercing infected?”
But more often than not, any discomfort is down to irritation or an allergic reaction rather than an infection. And it’s important you know the difference so you can get the treatment you need. So, with that in mind, here’s how to identify what’s wrong with your piercing and how you treat each one.
Infections
Infections are caused by bacteria and other contaminating substances getting into the wound. This can mostly be avoided by following basic hygiene rules and using a trusted piercer. The tissue surrounding an infected piercing will become swollen, red, painful and hot when you touch it. It’s likely it will also have a discharge that’s dark yellow or green in colour. It may also appear slightly bloody or smell unpleasant. In short, it will look pretty gross.
If you experience any discharge that is light in colour without any of the pain, swelling or redness, don’t worry. This is just natural sebum which is normal and healthy.
If you do think your piercing is infected, you should go and see a doctor as a precaution as they may wish to prescribe you antibiotics depending on how serious the infection is. They may also suggest that you bathe your ear in hot, salty water as it can soothe the pain and encourage it to heal faster.
Irritations
Just like infections, an irritated piercing can cause pain, swelling and redness. But it shouldn’t cause the horrible discharge that comes with an infection. Other symptoms of irritation include a solid (non-fluid filled) lump around the hole or some slight peeling.
There are countless ways that a piercing can become irritated but they more or less have one thing in common: physical trauma. This could be anything from accidentally knocking it with your hairbrush, overcleaning it, playing with it, sleeping on it or anything else that would put pressure on your piercing.
If you can find out what’s caused the irritation and stop doing it, chances are the symptoms will disappear on their own. Although again a warm salt water soak will help soothe the pain. Just don't over do it!
Allergic Reactions
Allergic reactions are caused when your body rejects something. In this case it could be the metal used in your piercing or something in the cleaning solution you’re using. You can identify an allergic reaction by a rash, itchiness and redness. And if it’s an allergic reaction to the metal, the skin might pull away from the jewellery. The symptoms will also appear very soon after being pierced rather than a few days later.
You are more likely to experience an allergic reaction to metals like gold and silver than you are with hypoallergenic materials like surgical steel. Which is why we recommend always getting pierced with implant grade titanium studs, then moving to a stainless steel stud as an everyday wear.

With Mother’s Day 2023 just around the corner, we know there’ll be some partners out there in need of assistance on the gift-buying front. That’s why we’ve put together this carefully curated guide to the dos and don’ts of Mother’s Day gifts.
Thing To Avoid
Before we get into what makes a great Mother’s Day gift, here are a few things you should avoid at all costs.
Unwanted Electronics
Maybe she’s the type of mamma who’d love a new games console or a smart watch but as a general rule you should be wary about buying fancy new gadgets as Mother’s Day gifts. At best it can seem impersonal, but at worst it could look like you’ve bought something you wanted for yourself.
Domestic Appliances
What’s one of the worst presents you could give someone for Mother’s Day? A vacuum cleaner. In fact, unless she’s been dropping some serious hints about wanting a fancy new coffee maker, back away from the appliances altogether. Not only are they boring but they can be pretty offensive.
A Repeat Gift
Sure she might have loved those fluffy slippers you got her last year. Or that bottle of perfume you got for her birthday. But we can guarantee you won’t get the same reaction if you repeat the gift for a second time around (or the third, or the fourth!). Make sure you go for something new and unique.
No Gift At All
People have different opinions on whether or not partners should buy their wife or girlfriend a gift for mother’s day. But one things for sure: if the kids are too young to do it themselves, you definitely need to be stepping up and helping them celebrate mum. But we’d always recommend getting your partner a gift to show your own appreciation for them as an amazing mother. Especially if you’ll be getting the same treatment on Father’s day!
What Gifts Will She Love For Mother’s Day Instead?
The ideal Mother’s Day gift should be something pampering, personal or pretty. Or the three Ps rule as we like to call it! We’re taking beauty gift boxes, personalised photo frames and of course, jewellery. Here’s our pick of some of our most popular pieces that are perfect for Mother’s Day.
Personalised Pendants
One of the sweetest jewellery gifts for mum is a pendant featuring her child’s birthstone. Check out our full range of bezel set birthstone hypoallergenic necklaces here. Best of all, you can currently add a free initial pendant to every birthstone necklace for Mother’s Day 2023. Meaning you get double the personalistion for the same price!
