5 Common Jewellery Mistakes To Avoid

Just like our clothing, there are certain styling and maintenance tips that we can follow to make sure our jewellery looks it’s best. And just like you wouldn't wear your favourite T-shirt every day for a month, there are certain mistakes to avoid too. Here’s our rundown of the five most common jewellery gaffes to stay clear of.

1. Wearing the Same Jewellery Every Day

When we have a couple of favourite pieces, it can be tempting to reach for those everyday rather than switching up your style. But there are a couple of reasons you should give your jewellery a break now and again.

Firstly, even though stainless steel jewellery does not tarnish like gold or silver, it can still collect grime and dirt if worn for a long time without being cleaned. Having a break between wears will keep your jewellery cleaner for longer.

Secondly, just like trying out a new outfit can boost your confidence, switching up your jewellery to reflect your vibe can do wonders for your self-esteem. Try to see your jewellery as a form of self-expression that will change as your mood does.

2. Not Cleaning Your Jewellery.

As we’ve mentioned above, even stainless steel jewellery can collect dirt which is why it’s important to clean your pieces regularly

Silver and gold jewellery requires more complicated methods of cleaning with specialist solutions to remove the tarnish as well as any bacteria. However, since titanium or surgical steel jewellery never loses its shine, all you’ll need is some soapy water to get it looking it’s best.

3. Not Storing Your Jewellery Correctly

Failing to store your jewellery correctly can lead to it getting tangled and, if made from precious metal, prone to scratches and scuffs.

Try to store all your pieces in a jewellery case or on a stand that will keep it safe and mean you won’t have to spend time detangling it every time you put it on. Boxes with dividers and drawers are the best for this. You should also make sure you reclasp you necklaces after you’ve taken them off for the same reason.

4. Not Thinking About the Lifespan of Your Jewellery Before Purchasing

Cheap costume jewellery from high street shops may look very on trend and affordable but they very rarely last more than a few months before showing signs of wear or discolouration. Instead, opt for jewellery made of materials that are durable and long lasting so you’re not having to part with the pounds more often.

5. Don’t Stick To The Rules Too Much

Ever been told that you shouldn’t mix metal colours or that ‘less is more’ when it comes to accessories? We say different!

When it comes to your own style, you can never make a mistake in our eyes. If you want to layer up your necklaces with alternate metals then go for it. Or double up on the stud earrings and hoops if you want.

Be as bold, bright or minimal as you like – make sure you rock your jewellery your way!
