How to choose the right earrings for your outfit.

Way back in the mists of time, both men and women discovered that when they got dressed each day, simple accessories and adornments can make a big difference! It’s why pins, brooches, bracelets and all manner of jewellery has been found in archaeological sites the world over.

Of course, in some societies, it was all about the bling! The flashier your jewellery, the better it was to show off your wealth and standing. Fast forward over the centuries and that’s sometimes still true. But mostly, it all comes down to one irrefutable and timeless fact. Adding jewellery to an outfit can transform it and lift your whole mood.

Fortunately, for modern fashion followers or everyday folk, no one has to poke bone or ivory through their earlobes to look good! Or invest in solid gold at a price that makes losing an earring a major disaster. There is now a wonderful array of surgical steel earrings that look incredible, in a huge variety of shapes and designs.

Developing your own fashion style

“Style is a way to say who you are, without having to speak.” American designer, Rachel Zoe.

Chances are you don’t have the cash available to commission one-off fashion designs or made-to-measure outfits. Not to worry though, as no matter how 'off the shelf' your clothes are, you can personalise and improve your look with a few strategic extra touches.
This is especially true of both elaborate dangling earrings or classic stud earrings. They are universally acknowledged as the quickest way to add interest and appeal to an outfit. Better still, unlike necklaces and bracelets, earrings don’t get in the way either, or get caught up in folds and buttons!

You probably use your own preferences, body shape and budget to put together fashionable outfits from an eclectic range of shops. By varying your hairstyle and such important details as beautiful hypoallergenic earrings, it’s possible to craft an even more distinctive look, that’s all your own.

Guidelines on jewellery and outfits

Have you ever asked what earrings go best with what outfit? The thing is, it’s really is all about personal choice.

Some fashion advisers suggest that elaborate, statement earrings and other jewellery such as necklaces and bracelets go best with sleek, elegant clothes. While bold or busy fashion statements should be paired with more simplistic earrings and jewellery options. The truth is, anything goes! If you like how a particular set of earrings looks with your outfit, that’s all that matters.

This includes how you use jewellery and earrings with coloured gemstones. You might want to select ones that match your clothing colour scheme. Or, you could opt for a total contrast to break the fashion mould.

Some people don’t worry too much about matching jewellery to fashions, but instead buy items that enhance their natural features. What would look best with your eye, hair or skin colour, and choice of makeup? Green eyes are often accentuated by purple tones, brown by yellow hues, and blues by fiery red or orange shades.

The same applies to matching earrings to your hairstyles. An elaborate updo could look amazing with sophisticated dangling earrings and a matching necklace and sweeping neckline, as well as makeup contouring to add definition, grace and femininity. But equally, the same hairstyle could also be worn with the simple addition of a timeless pair of well-crafted stud earrings, blush and lip colour, and a chunky roll-neck jumper for a rosy and cosy glow. For longer, flowing locks, many opt for earrings with length and shape that move naturally with their style.

There is one general rule of thumb when it comes to pairing jewellery to fashion choices though; gold and silver don’t always look good together. So, it’s advisable to wear sensitive earrings in silver with a dress containing silver buckles or other details for example.

Another widely held belief, is that silver and white gold look great against all skin tones, but gold is preferred for those with darker skin or hair.

Choosing the right earrings for your wardrobe

The only real hard and fast rule when it comes to pairing jewellery – especially earrings – with outfits is that you don’t want to end up “suffering” to look fashionable. Looking great for a while then coping with sore or itchy ear lobes is not pleasant! Which is why hypoallergenic earrings make fashion sense.
