Reactions Can Happen (Even With Hypoallergenic Metals)
Our jewellery is designed to be gentle on sensitive skin, but everyone's body is different. Here's what you need to know about caring for your ears and what to do if you experience any irritation.
Why Reactions Can Sometimes Happen
Hypoallergenic means our jewellery is less likely to cause a reaction than other metals - but no material is 100% reaction-proof for everyone. If you do experience some irritation, it doesn't necessarily mean you're allergic to the metal. Reactions can happen for several reasons:
•Individual sensitivity - everyone's skin chemistry is different
•Bacteria or buildup - earrings that aren't cleaned regularly can irritate the piercing
•Friction or pressure - backs fitted too tightly, sleeping on earrings, or constant touching
•Piercing not fully healed - new piercings are more vulnerable
•Body changes - hormones, illness, or stress can temporarily increase sensitivity
What's Normal vs What To Watch For
Normal adjustment (quite typical for the first few wears)
It's completely normal to feel slight tightness or simply be aware of your earrings when you first wear them. Minor temporary redness that settles within an hour of removal is also nothing to worry about.
Mild sensitivity
Itching, mild redness around the piercing, or slight localised swelling may indicate some sensitivity. This can often be managed at home (see below).
When to see a professional
Please consult a healthcare professional if you notice:
• Redness spreading beyond the immediate piercing area
• Yellow or green discharge
• Increasing pain, heat, or throbbing
• An earring back that feels embedded or is sinking into the skin
• Any reaction that worsens after removing your earrings
If You Have a Mild Reaction
Don't panic! Mild reactions can often be managed with a bit of care:
1. Remove your earrings and set them aside
2. Clean the area gently with saline solution (salt water) or a mild cleanser
3. Give your ears a rest - avoid wearing any earrings until symptoms have fully settled
4. Clean your earrings thoroughly before wearing them again
5. Reintroduce gradually - start with just a few hours and slowly build up
If It's More Serious
If you're experiencing signs of infection (spreading redness, discharge, increasing pain), a reaction that's getting worse, or an earring that feels stuck or embedded, please see a healthcare professional.
They'll be able to advise on the best course of action.
Important: If an earring back feels embedded or is sinking into your skin, don't try to remove it yourself - a medical professional can do this safely.
Still Having Trouble?
If you've tried our stainless steel jewellery and found it doesn't suit your skin, our pure titanium range may be a better option for you.
Titanium is one of the most biocompatible metals available and tends to work well even for those with very sensitive skin.
