Our Guide to Using the “4 Gift Rule” this Christmas.
We all know that Christmas is a time for giving. But there is a point where we need to say enough is enough. And it’s not just about costs. Excessive buying can also spoil the magic of Christmas. It’s a sad fact that it’s now normal to surround children with a mountain of presents only for them to forget all about them by boxing day. But how do we combat this over consumption whilst still treating our children this Christmas? Enter the 4 Gift Rule.
What is the 4 Gift Rule?
Originating in America, the basic idea is to stop overspending on a huge number of gifts just to make the pile under the tree look bigger and instead hand pick curated gifts from each of the following four categories:
- Something they want
- Something they need
- Something to wear
- Something to read
Each member of your family then ends up with four different, truly thoughtful gifts. Not only does this help make your Christmas shopping more manageable, it also makes your little ones appreciate their gifts more.
1. Something They Want
This is the present that they’ve chosen for themselves. It could be that you’ve asked them outright what they’d like or you could have overheard them talking about it. Chances are this will be the “big”, most expensive gift they’ll receive. Something like the latest doll for little ones or a fancy new computer game if you’re buying for a teen.
2. Something They Need
This is a more practical present that will depend on their age. A toddler might need some new wellies or PJs whilst those of school age might need a new backpack. Older kids could be in need of something more expensive like a laptop, in which case you might want to consider a slightly cheaper “something they want option.”
3. Something to Wear
Considering that we’re restricting spending to just 4 gifts, it’s normal to buy something a bit more special than just new socks or underwear (which could go in the “something they need category”). Instead, opt for something which is more of a treat like a party dress or a pair of trainers. Or better still, a piece of jewellery. Unlike clothes and shoes which they’ll grow out of in five minutes, a pair of stud earrings or a timeless necklace is something they’ll treasure for years to come.
Our collection of stainless steel studs is sure to contain something that speaks to each of your family’s interests. Dancers will love our Sparkly Ballerina Hypoallergenic Earrings or there’s a whole host of animals to choose from for nature lovers. Or how about keeping things festive with a pair of Santa Hat Hypoallergenic Studs. Then check out our range of A-Z initial necklaces that are perfect for teens.
4. Something to Read
You can interpret this final category however you like so long as there is some form of reading involved. It might be a classic Christmas story, the latest kid’s book or a magazine subscription linked to a hobby or interest. Or else it could be a craft set with instructions they need to read and follow, a graphic novel or a board game like scrabble that involves words.
